East Allis
Working for the city comes with a pay bump
West Allis once boomed with growth thanks to Allis-Chalmers, a manufacturer of farm equipment, engines and heavy machinery. The factory closed in the late 1990s, and job opportunities became scarce in the city. However, jobs in the East Allis neighborhood are still plentiful, with large companies in the industrial sectors of both the northern and southern halves (some even in the old Allis-Chalmers buildings). The West Allis Department of Public Works is in the neighborhood and offers a special incentive to some employees. "If you work for the city and live in the city, you get a pay bump," says Alderman Ray Turner of District 1. "So those working for the DPW, police department and fire department make more working there than people from outside of the city would. It motivates people to work in their community."Less expensive homes than in Milwaukee County
Houses across East Allis are similar in size and style, with bungalows, Cape Cods and Tudor-style homes selling between $120,000 and $365,000. Prices vary slightly, with homes south of Mitchell Street fetching a higher price than those north of Greenfield Avenue. Yards are small and narrow, usually with just enough space for small seating areas and detached garages accessible by back alleyways. Multi-family houses are also available, with duplexes selling as low as $120,000 and four-unit buildings topping out at $330,000. The median price in East Allis is $240,000 – well below both the national and Milwaukee County Metro medians. "The area also has a good balance of residential and industrial areas, which helps the property tax base," says Mandi Miller, Realtor with Re/Max Forward. Prices are up from the previous year, and houses last an average of two weeks after listing.A growing collection of Latin restaurants
Locally owned restaurants are along the neighborhood's main streets, including Kegel's Inn, a century-old German restaurant in a historic building that was a speakeasy in the 1920s. Latin cuisine is common in East Allis, with five Latino-owned establishments on Burnham Street alone. "They've added to the city's culinary diversity," says Mayor Dan Devine. The restaurants reflect the city's growing Hispanic population, which "nearly doubled from the 2010 census to the 2020 census," Devine says. "There is even more diversity in West Allis now, especially in the east side."The West Allis Towne Center shopping plaza is in the neighborhood, and familiar stores include Hobby Lobby, Burlington, Ross and Five Below. Pick 'n Save and the West Allis Farmers' Market are in the Liberty Heights Park neighborhood.
Safety improvements for the Six Points intersection
Busy roads cut through the neighborhood, including National Avenue, Burnham Street, Beloit Road and West Lincoln Avenue. Beloit Road and Burnham Street meet at the cross of South 58th Street, creating what locals call Six Points. "The intersection is not the safest, but the city's engineering department is coming in 2027 to fix the area and improve car and pedestrian safety," Singh says. Milwaukee County Transit Systems buses have many stops in East Allis, and the neighborhood is 6 miles from downtown Milwaukee. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 10 miles southeast, and Aurora West Allis Medical Center is 2 miles west.School district referendum to bring $70 million in updates and repairs
Neighborhood students may attend one of three elementary schools: Horace Mann Elementary and Pershing Elementary, rated C by Niche, and Jefferson Elementary, rated C-plus. Children continue learning at West Milwaukee Intermediate School, rated C, followed by C-plus-rated Central High School. By popular vote in November 2024, a $70 million capital referendum was passed for improvements across all West Allis-West Milwaukee schools – the district's first capital referendum passed in over 20 years.New projects and activities at Liberty Heights Park
West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Center is in the neighborhood's southwestern corner and is a significant community destination where residents of the two cities gather. The gymnasium and elevated track are available for sports leagues and open gym, and the Maker's Space is the newest addition to the building. Liberty Heights Park is in the neighborhood that divides East Allis and is a short drive from every residency. In addition to sports courts and a baseball diamond, the park is getting a new pavilion with a Wi-Fi connection and an acrylic rink for year-round skating.
