Wildwood Estates
Houses are in high demand as the population shifts
For decades, the homes in Wildwood Estates rarely went up for sale, but a shift in the population in recent years has prompted more listings and new homeowners in the area. "People selling their homes now have been in them a very long time," Mullikin says. "Some residents have lived there for 40 years or more, but that generation is phasing out. The new ownership coming in is young, budding families and young couples." Cape Cods, small Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s make up the winding residential roads. The houses with small and uniform lawns range between $235,000 and $440,000 with a median price of $300,000 – up 16% from the previous year. Tall trees, planted during the area's early development, are on patches of grass between the roads and sidewalks, shading front lawns and roads free from traffic. Like in all West Allis neighborhoods, demand is high, and houses in Wildwood Estates sell in less than three weeks after listing. There are multiple apartment complexes near the commercial strip.Highway 100 has local shops, grocery stores and department stores
South 108th Street, which is Highway 100, is West Allis' main commercial strip with shopping centers, car dealerships and strip malls. "Highway 100 has pretty much anything you can think of for retail," Mullikin says. Southtown Shopping Center has a Dollar Tree, Buffalo Wild Wings and more stores and restaurants on the neighborhood's westernmost edge. Target, Piggly Wiggly, Marshalls, Pick 'n Save and more department stores are also within walking distance of the neighborhood. The Weathered Shed is a home goods store that offers do-it-yourself classes, teaching participants how to refurbish furniture, make sweet treats and create original artwork using provided materials. Two schools within walking distance thanks to a pedestrian bridge
Mitchell Elementary School is in the neighborhood and rated B-minus by Niche. Children can also walk to Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate School despite being across the freeway. Thanks to a pedestrian bridge over I-41 that connects the neighborhoods of Wildwood Estates and Pleasant Valley, children can walk between the two without crossing any busy streets. The middle school is rated C, and Nathan Hale High School is rated B-minus.Summer and winter activities at Greenfield Park
After school and on weekends, residents walk to Mitchell Elementary School to play on its field, playground and swing set. West Allis Athletic Complex and West Allis Dog Park border the high school's campus, and Greenfield Park is beyond its northwest corner. The park is the city's largest and has a golf course, disc golf course, walking trails and a public pool. The fishing pond allows catch-and-release fishing year-round, and Milwaukee Great Lakes Sports Fisherman Club organizes kids' ice fishing clinics in winter.Interstate 41 connects the neighborhood to other major throughways
Wildwood Estates is between Interstate 41 and South 108th Street, but sound barriers separate the interstate from the residential roads. "They're these big, nasty concrete walls, but they keep the sound from the freeway down," Mullikin says. "The freeway is also elevated above the neighborhood, which helps reduce sound." The two busy roads go north and south through the city, connecting north to Interstate 94 and south to Interstate 43. Downtown Milwaukee is 10 miles northeast, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 10 miles southeast. Aurora West Allis Medical Center is less than two miles away. Most residents rely on personal cars for travel, but Milwaukee County Transit System buses stop along National and Oklahoma avenues, as well as South 108th Street.
