West Buechel is a relaxed, residential area in Louisville that’s just down the road from top amenities like the Louisville Zoo and a diverse selection of restaurants on Bardstown Road. “It’s just a quiet area. But you’re still close to the city,” says Bernice Morales, assistant property manager at Royal Arms of Louisville Apartments in the neighborhood. “West Buechel has everything close by, especially grocery stores and shopping centers. Downtown is ten or fifteen minutes away, and we also get a lot of college students from Bellarmine University.”

West Buechel is convenient to many Louisville facilities and is less than 6 miles east of the Louisville International Airport and 5 miles south of UofL Health – Peace Hospital. South Fork Beargrass Creek also weaves through West Buechel, so some homes around the waterway could be vulnerable to flooding.

Most of West Buechel’s single-family homes are clustered in the neighborhood’s southeast corner. These homes sit on a grid street plan and often have small, grassy lawns. Recently built homes in this area most commonly feature modern, detached townhome styles with three bedrooms. These usually sell for between $210,000 and $260,000. Older homes built in the 1970s or earlier commonly feature ranch and shotgun styles. These homes, which come on the market infrequently, typically go for between $100,000 and $150,000. West Buechel also has a cluster of apartment complexes in its northern portion, including The Hemingway Apartments and Royal Arms of Louisville Apartments, that attract college students and commuters.

We have a Costco three minutes away, and San Matthews Mall is about ten minutes away,” Morales says. West Buechel has plenty of local restaurants nearby. Brew & Sip Coffee bar serves smoothies, breakfast items like chicken and waffles, and, of course, brewed-in-house coffee. Jamaican Jerk Center brings authentic Caribbean Fare to the neighborhood. The restaurant specializes in jerk chicken, with meals like the jerk chicken sandwich and jerk burger. To satisfy a sweet tooth, locals visit Chocolate and Nut Kingdom of Bardstown Road. The spacious candy shop has an array of Turkish delights, candy-covered nuts, gummies and chocolates.

Petersburg Park and the Southeast Family YMCA
Petersburg Park is just south of West Buechel. Petersburg Park’s inclusive playground has a ramp, rubber surfaces, and sensory and musical elements that welcome children of all abilities. In the summer, residents can use the splash park, green space for cookouts and the basketball and tennis courts for a competitive workout. Just east of the neighborhood, the Southeast Family YMCA offers more recreation options and programs, including youth sports leagues, group fitness classes and summer camps. During Louisville’s rainy days or cool winter months, the YMCA also offers indoor recreation options including an indoor aquatic center and fitness center.
