In South Fargo, The Wilds are anything but
Nudging the Horace city limits, with farmlands extending to the west, The Wilds marks the furthest southwest extent of Fargo’s current city limits. “This area is so new, there is a unique blend of the quaint, small-town atmosphere, and the ability to travel to the heart of West Fargo in mere minutes,” says Erik Wall, Army Veteran, Realtor & Team Owner of the Wall Street Realty Team brokered by eXp Realty. Still under development, it’s a master-planned community of tightly packed homes along quiet side streets, with subdivisions like The Ranch separating themselves within the community. A centrally-located elementary school sees neighborhood children walking together in the mornings or a long drop-off line as parents drop their kids off on the commute to work. In the evenings, parents return from work – Microsoft, North Dakota State University, Bobcat and Sandford Medical are just four of the many large employers that call Fargo home – and head out to stroll the sidewalks with their dogs or play pickleball at the park.
The Wilds neighborhood continues to expand, with new homes and commercial properties.

Modern suburban homes
Contemporary ramblers and bi-levels incorporate several design themes, including touches of craftsman, traditional and Prairie design. Most sit on narrow lots under a quarter of an acre, with space in the fenced backyards for a patio and play. Trees are a rarity, most in the form of new plantings along the streets and in front yards. Two- and three-stall garages face the streets, with space for vehicles and snow removal equipment. Single-family properties in the later additions to the neighborhood in the southern portion regularly sell for between $300,000 and $550,000. Homes in the northern part of the neighborhood sitting on wider lots featuring pond frontage get from $525,000 to $875,000, and those with square footage reaching above 4,000 square feet usually get from $800,000 to $1.1 million. Homes in The Wilds often come with ‘Special Assessments.’ “Specials are a unique situation – new builds, we deal with a lot higher special assessments than anywhere else,” says Mary Schimke, Realtor with Archer Real Estate Services. “A lot of new builds have specials up to 10% of the cost of the build.” These specials are how the city bills infrastructure improvements that benefit specific properties, spreading the cost across only those properties instead of the entire population.
The Wilds is a highly desirable area for families and professionals.

New schools welcome students
Students in The Wilds will attend Legacy Elementary School, which gets an A-minus grade from Niche, “Legacy Elementary being in the heart of the subdivision offers the benefit of seamless drop-off and pick-up to families with young children,” says Wall, whose team has over 20 years combined selling experience in the area. Students will move up to Heritage Middle School, which earns a B-plus, and then finish at Horace High School, which opened in 2021 and is not yet graded by Niche. While still new, the school offers a full range of athletics with 25 programs, including football, cheerleading, and boys’ and girls’ wrestling and hockey. Fine arts programs include drama and music, while clubs include Envirothon and the school newspaper.

A car is a must in The Wilds
The quiet neighborhood streets and sidewalks – the neighborhood receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 overall – are great for biking and walking at night. However, there are limited nearby amenities and no public transit routes - “The vast majority of people in the area drive their personal vehicles, most places are within a 10 minute drive,” says Wall. They can hop onto Interstate 94, 3 miles north, which provides a fast route east to Downtown Fargo and Moorhead, or west into the plains. This keeps the drive to Downtown Fargo, an 11-mile journey, under 20 minutes most days. Both Hector International Airport and North Dakota State University are roughly the same distance as Downtown and are usually the same drive time. Sanford Medical Center is the closest place for 24-hour emergency care, 5 miles away, and is also one of the region’s biggest employers.
The Wilds is conveniently located near major thoroughfares, making communing quite easy.
Near all the modern conveniences, The Wilds offers all of this and more.

Dakota Park offers a variety of uses
Dakota Park’s multi-use rink is home to five pickleball courts in the summer, then gets flooded in the winter for use as an outdoor rink. It’s popular for ice skating, pick-up ice hockey games and broomball – which Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, describes as “A mix of hockey and soccer, with a handled paddle where the paddle on the end is a molded broom – years ago they used to play with real brooms. It doesn’t use skates… when I played it you’d just use tennis shoes or winter boots.” There’s an expansive playground with towering slides, as well as a shelter.

One key feature is The Wilds access to walking and biking paths, connecting families.

32nd Avenue is home to tons of dining options
“Even though there aren’t any restaurants right inside The Wilds,” says Wall, “you don’t have to go far to find good food! If you head to Sheyenne Street and head North, you’ll find The Lights.” It’s home to Tati’s Mediterranean Saveur, where they focus on Lebanese cuisine. Families can grab ice cream cones at Lundy’s and stroll around the plaza while sports fans post up at Bar Down. Across the street, Randy’s Diner Too serves up all-day breakfasts and diner favorites. There is a Hornbacher’s and a Cash Wise Food equidistant from the neighborhood for groceries, and a Burggraf’s Ace Hardware is next to the Cash Wise for home maintenance and improvement needs.
The Bar Down is a staple sports bar and grill serving residents of South Fargo.
Tati's Mediterranean Restaurant is located in The Lights Plaza, offering guests amazing cuisine.

The Lights shine throughout the year
The Lights is also home to events ranging from weekly fitness sessions, movies after dark and national music acts that draw thousands of fans. Regular highlights include professional bull riding, and in the winter, the Plaza is converted to a public ice rink under lights. Just down 32nd Avenue, the USHL’s Fargo Force plays their home games at the Scheels Arena, which also holds indoor concerts throughout the year. The Red River Valley Fairgrounds hosts various events throughout the year, including the Big Iron Farm Show and the Red River Valley Fair, while West Fest is a weeklong community celebration in September.
The Lights is centered around events, dining and living, all in the same wonderful space.

The Fargo-Moorhead Diversion Project
The Horace Diversion of the Sheyenne River runs along the neighborhood's west side. Built to alleviate flooding along the Sheyenne, it has succeeded there but has led to homes on the western half of The Wilds being under a greater threat of flooding. Heck spoke at length about the Fargo-Moorhead Diversion Project, which is currently in progress. It is a 30-mile diversion that is being built to protect the entire Fargo-Moorhead metro from the Red River floods. When completed, the $3.2 billion project is intended to eliminate the need for flood insurance while protecting up to the 500-year floodplain level.
The Wilds is a well-established and expanding neighborhood located in West Fargo.
This steady growth indicates that The Wilds will remain a vibrant place for newcomers.
