Peaceful West Haven neighborhood on the Long Island Sound
Although part of West Haven, the West Shore feels like a community of its own. Overlooking the sparkling Long Island Sound, this Connecticut neighborhood has cozy, coastal cottages neatly lining its suburban streets. Locals can walk down the West Shore's shaded blocks to the peaceful water, and though this established community's coastal location feels like a reprieve from nearby city life, commuters enjoy several options; New Haven is just 6 miles away, and the town's nearby train station takes riders to New York City in under 2 hours.
Renovated coastal cottages overlooking the water
According to Wayne Hugendubel, Realtor at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and West Haven native, West Shore was the first neighborhood in West Haven to see a home sold for over $1 million. That said, although home prices in West Shore tend to lean higher than other parts of the town, the vast majority of properties in this neighborhood still sell for between $300,000 and $600,000. Cottages, some facing the water, and common suburban homes like ranches and bilevels, are popular styles. "A lot of these were built back in the day as cottages and have been renovated to year-round homes," Hugendubel says. He notes that West Shore saw most of its development between the 1950s and '80s.
Coastal homes in West Shore are surprisingly affordable compared to various other CT coastal towns.

Public beach accesses throughout town
The shoreline of the Long Island Sound offers plentiful recreation in the West Shore, with Prospect Beach among several public accesses. Popular activities include kite flying, paddleboarding and laying out on the sand. Just east, Savin Rock Park and Bradley Point Park have more public running paths, bocce ball courts and a playground overlooking the sound's cool, blue water. West Shore locals come together for community events like the Savin Rock Festival, a waterfront carnival in July, and the West Haven Summer Concert Series, which features a diverse lineup of local artists on the town's green.
Recreation and waterfront access are important to West Shore residents and make up a large portion of the local lifestyle.
Savin Rock Park offers a ton of recreation opportunities and plenty of space for quiet reflection.

The $130 million project included new STEM classrooms and labs, a media center, an auditorium and more. "It was a total renovation. It's absolutely gorgeous, state-of-the-art," Hugendubel says.

Commuting on the New Haven Line to New York and Fairfield County
West Haven's train station, which opened in 2013, borders the neighborhood along Railroad Avenue. From the station, commuters can ride the New Haven Line along the southern shore of Connecticut into New York City. New York City is about 75 miles southeast of West Shore. "People commute all over Fairfield County," Hugendubel says. "It was a really big deal to put a train station in here. It's busy all the time." Interstate 95 goes through West Shore and takes drives to New York or further north along the east coast. New Haven, home to Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital, is about 6 miles northeast and is also accessible via the train or Interstate. The Tweed New Haven Airport is 10 miles from West Shore, and the West Haven VA Medical Center is 4 miles north.
