A historic business district and river access in Willamette
Situated at the confluence of two rivers, Willamette Falls stood on its own as an independent town for more than 23 years at the turn of the century. Its remnants now serve as the heart of West Linn’s Willamette neighborhood – a thriving community on the city’s western end featuring a historic business district, a mixture of old and new houses, and easy access to downtown Portland through Interstate 205.
The Willamette Falls Electric Company set up the town of Willamette Falls in 1893 to house people who worked at its hydroelectric power plant on the Willamette River. This town grew quickly over the next two decades as its residents built houses, restaurants, shops, a school, and an electric railroad linking the power plant with its town square. But the town’s fortunes reversed after a 1908 typhoid outbreak, and its search for clean water led to its merger with West Linn in 1916.

A diverse housing market from mid-century split levels to new builds
The 17-block Willamette Falls Neighborhood Historic District encompasses the town’s original footprint. Its collection of Queen Annes, Colonial Revival houses, and Craftsman bungalows sits at the center of an almost 1,200-acre neighborhood where you’ll also find ranch-style and split-level houses from the 1960s and 1970s, Northwest contemporary houses from the 1980s that offer a regional spin on mid-century modern design techniques, and a variety of new construction houses from the past 20 to 30 years. These houses sit atop 5,000 to 10,000-square-foot lots on streets that start to curve and weave around the neighborhood’s terrain the further you get from the historic district. They fetch $400,000 to $1.2 million depending on their age, condition, and lot size.
