The South Florida city of West Melbourne, located about 6 miles from the oceanfront, offers a suburban atmosphere close to the burgeoning aerospace industry and Florida’s Space Coast attractions. Founded in 1959 to avoid Melbourne taxes, the city has grown to over 25,000 people. “West Melbourne is very desirable because of its school system and new home constructions,” says Jonathan Krauser, a real estate agent for J. “The draw is that West Melbourne is a bit more affordable,” says Monica McKune, a Broker Associate at Keller Williams Realty. “You get large homes and more for your money.” The median price for homes in West Melbourne is $410,000, lower than Florida’s median and some nearby inland communities, including Viera East. The city's home styles range from the single-story ranch and craftsman to two-story new traditional and Tudor revivals. Townhomes and condos are also for sale.

West Melbourne is served by Brevard Public Schools, which has a B-plus rating on Niche. Private schools in the city are mainly Christian-based, including Cavalry Chapel Academy, which has an A-minus score.

A ‘field of dreams’ in West Melbourne
The newest park is West Melbourne Community Park, which contains 41,000-square-foot skateboarding facilities and a grass amphitheater. Within the park is the Space Coast Field of Dreams, a five-acre sports complex and playground that opened in 2016. The complex contains a baseball field, basketball court and a mini golf course. Bryant Adams Park has an off-leash dog park and pickleball and racquetball courts. West Melbourne is roughly seven miles from the beach and less than 50 miles south of the Kennedy Space Center.

Shopping and dining on New Haven Avenue
Most of West Melbourne’s dining areas are on New Haven Avenue. Keke’s breakfast cafe serves brunch and lunch options. Pho Viet Noodle House serves authentic Vietnamese dishes, including Pho, vermicelli noodles and spring rolls. Grocery stores such as Publix and Sprouts, as well as large retailers such as Sam's Club, Walmart, and Kohls, are also located on New Haven Avenue.

Highway, bus and airport connections closeby
Interstate 95 runs west of the city and has a dedicated exit onto New Haven Avenue. The 321Transit number 20 bus connects the area to Melbourne and other routes through Brevard County. Melbourne Orlando International Airport is the closest airport. Some of the major companies based near West Melbourne are located near the airport, including Northrup Grumman, Collins Aerospace and L3Harris Technologies. Medical facilities are in Melbourne and include Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital and Holmes Regional Medical Center.
While hurricanes can be a risk on the Space Coast, McKune says the area is lucky and that no significant flooding or heavy damage occurs when storms do come. West Melbourne also actively maintains its canals and waterways to carry stormwater away from the city.

According to the latest annual reports from the West Melbourne Police, violent crime rates have slightly increased, but property crime rates have decreased.
