Central Menlo Park
From small ranches to sprawling mansions
This highly desirable suburban community offers a mix of midcentury and modern homes with quick access to nearby amenities. A stroll through its leafy, tree-lined streets displays renovated 1950s-era cottages and ranch-style homes with updated amenities like cathedral ceilings, open kitchens and dark wood interiors. There’s also an increasing number of contemporary, luxury homes being built in the area with large footprints and up to five and six bedrooms. “It’s broken away from your average rancher. Now, they’re building multi-level farmhouse-style homes. It’s much more eclectic, modern and affluent,” says Realtor Rich Bassin of Compass Real Estate, who lives nearby. Home prices for smaller, older dwellings can range from $3 million to $5 million, while newly built homes can cost upwards of $7 million.Menlo Park City School District
Students in Menlo Park attend some of the most sought-after schools in the region. Two schools within the neighborhood, Oak Knoll Elementary School and Hillview Middle School are both past recipients of the California Distinguished Schools Award and have A ratings on Niche. Menlo-Atherton High, the neighborhood’s designated high school, is ranked among the top 250 in California by U.S. News and World Report. Menlo-Atherton offers plenty of opportunities for students pursuing performing arts. The building features a 492-seat theater for school plays, musicals and concerts. Menlo-Atherton High has an A-plus and ranks No. 7 on Niche’s list of the best public high schools in San Mateo County.Lyle Park
Residents can get some fresh air at the verdant Lyle Park, a community green space with open fields, a playground and basketball courts. For a more woodsy adventure, locals head a few miles west to some of the most scenic preserves and hiking areas California has to offer, like the rugged, redwood-covered ridges and valleys at Teague Hill Open Space Preserve, Huddart Park and Jasper Ridge.Downtown Menlo Park
The walkable, bikeable Santa Cruz Avenue is Central Menlo Park’s main thoroughfare. It runs into Downtown Menlo Park, a small commercial district packed with shops and restaurants. For a hearty Italian meal, Ristorante Carpaccio is a tried-and-true local favorite with woodfire cooking and boilerplate fare like pizza and pasta. For upscale dining, Camper is a Michelin Guide-approved contemporary restaurant with lantern-lit ambiance, large windows and landscape paintings. Its seasoned chefs serve up premium cuts of locally sourced meats alongside handmade pasta. As for quotidian errands, like grabbing groceries, there’s a Trader Joe’s where folks can fill carts with fresh produce. The upscale Draeger’s Market — a high-end, family-owned supermarket with a tempting assortment of meats, cheese and wine — is another nearby option.Bayshore Freeway or the Caltrain
Commuters have it easy in Menlo Park with the Bayshore Freeway running right along the north side, which is easily accessible. Additionally, Central Menlo Park is close to a Caltrain station that goes as far north as San Francisco or south to the heart of Silicon Valley. That said, most residents opt to drive.
