Northwood Shores
Cozy single-family homes juxtaposed with sleek high-rise condos
Most of the Northwood Shores area is made up of single-family homes, some of which date back to the 1920s and many of which were built across the mid-20th century. It’s a mix that gives the area a pastoral feel, accentuated by the dense collection of palm and oak trees that shade its streets. These homes are situated cozily close to each other and connected by a network of sidewalks that grease relationships between neighbors. “People that live there love it there,” says Gutknecht, who has lived in South Florida for roughly a decade. “They do get to know each other walking around.”Mediterranean and Craftsman bungalows are common architectural styles seen around the majority of Northwood Shores, with square footage between 1,000 and 2,000. Bigger homes fill the area’s waterfront, along Flagler Drive and facing a sliver of the Intracoastal Waterway. That includes some high-rise condo buildings, too. Some modern options are squeezed around the established ones here, too, a sign of the bubbling current of development happening here. “Northwood Shores is one of the last historic neighborhoods that have not been landmarked,” says Lisa Mastronardi, a local realtor with Illustrated Properties, who has been in real estate in the area for some 15 years. “So you have a mix of old and new homes — many of them stunning and unforgettable.” There are some studio and one-bedroom condos in Northwood Shores that sell for prices in the $100,000s, while some of the biggest and most extravagant units can top $1 million. Single-family homes in the neighborhood usually have price tags from just under a million to around $3 million. The area’s crime score of 8 ranks above the national average of 4, according to the CAP Index.
A cornucopia of flavors, within arms reach
Northwood Shores may be mostly residential, but it runs adjacent to a bustling commercial corridor between 23rd and 25th Streets. That area is loaded with restaurants, representing myriad cultures. Simmer Down Bar & Grill is popular for Jamaican food, right down the street from Malakor, a hotspot for Thai. And Agora, a street over, serves up flavors from the Mediterranean. Tina’s Market, next door to Simmer Down, is a spot to grab quick foodstuffs. There’s also a Whole Foods Market just a few miles away by the 450,000-square-foot Tanger Outlets, which has everything from Bath & Body Works to a Nike Factory Store. Multiple houses of worship are among this area’s conveniences as well — the neighborhood is home to Palm Beach Moravian Church and Temple Beth El, a synagogue.West Palm Beach has multiple well-known events
Those in this community can take advantage of the city’s multitude of events. For example, the second Friday of each month brings Screen on the Green, a series of free movie showings in nearby Downtown West Palm Beach. Clematis by Night, meanwhile, is a weekly series of musical performances that take place on Tuesday evenings at the Great Lawn downtown. The 4th on Flagler is a staple of the city’s annual calendar, a huge Fourth of July party complete with three stages of music and an almost 20-minute fireworks show.Palm Beach schools offer dedicated programming
Kids in this area can attend schools in The School District of Palm Beach County, a B-plus-rated system. A possible path is to start at C-rated Northmore Elementary, which has a full-blown arts program, touching on visual, performing and communications mediums. Students can explore the dedicated biomedical sciences program at Roosevelt Community Middle, which has a C-plus grade, before perhaps entering either the medical sciences or biotechnology programs at C-plus-rated Palm Beach Lakes Community High.Boating can be a breeze in Northwood Shores
With a perch right along the Intracoastal Waterway, boating is popular in this area. Many homes on the coast have boat slips out back, making it easy to cruise up and down the coast or out to the ocean. There are boat ramps at nearby Currie Park, too, an almost 14-acre spot that also features a playground and tennis courts.Route 1 is the No. 1 option for getting around
Northwood Shores runs adjacent to a sliver of U.S. Route 1, the area’s main transportation artery. Drivers can use Route 1 to get up and down the coast, or head there to catch the Palm Tran bus. Also, Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, one of the cross streets, connects with Interstate 95. Palm Beach International Airport is only 6 miles away, too, via Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and South Australian Avenue.
