Poinciana Park
Old Spanish homes are a highlight of Poinciana Park
One of the most charming areas of the neighborhood is the Vedado Park Historic District, a small section of one-story Spanish-style homes built during the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s. “These were some of the first plots of land in West Palm Beach that were plotted out for homes 100 years ago,” Gutknecht says. Renovations prior to the district’s historic designation have taken a toll on some of the area’s architecture, but lifelong West Palm Beach resident Bill Shearouse says there are still plenty of original elements for homeowners to discover. “They’ll pull up carpet, and they won’t know what it is, and I’ll say, ‘That’s the original Dade County pine, a really rare find,” says Shearouse, Realtor and senior partner of The ShearHouse Group with United Realty Group, Inc. Although not designated historic, homes on the north side of the neighborhood are of similar age and appeal, with Spanish-style architecture remaining prominent. Regardless of location, three-bedroom single-family homes usually sell between $450,000 and $650,000, while larger properties can cost $700,000 to $800,000.Dine on Dixie Highway or head to Clematis Street for live music
Downtown West Palm Beach is a hub of entertainment, where residents catch shows at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts or peruse the galleries at the Norton Museum of Art. Clematis Street is best experienced after sunset when live music brings a crowd to retro bars like Lost Weekend. Closer to home, Cholo Soy Cocina serves homemade Latin specialties to diners on a shaded, mural-covered patio hidden behind South Dixie Highway. Belle & Maxwell’s has a stylish yet vintage ambiance with stained glass chandeliers, while Rhythm Café honors the past by displaying items from the neighboring Elephant’s Foot Antiques. There are multiple specialty markets within walking distance of the neighborhood, including Colonial Supermarket and La Familia Grocery, a go-to for Latin staples. Publix is popular for groceries, although home cooks looking for the freshest cuts of meat tend to gravitate toward the butcher’s counter at Joseph’s Classic Market.Fourth on Flagler is one of the city’s most prominent traditions
Living within a few miles of downtown West Palm Beach means having a front-row seat to the city’s best events, including the 36-year tradition of Fourth on Flagler. This rousing Fourth of July celebration features live music, food and a lengthy fireworks display. Other events include weekly live music on Clematis Street, outdoor movie screenings and concerts on the waterfront.Career academies at Forest Hill Community High
Students may walk to Belvedere Elementary and Conniston Middle, which receive grades of C-plus and B-minus on Niche, respectively. Forest Hill Community High, which scores a B-minus, offers a handful of career programs covering topics such as culinary arts, environmental science, criminal justice, engineering and more. The nearby Palm Beach Atlantic University invites students to sign up for online courses to earn early college credit. For students wishing to pursue a creative career, A-plus-rated Dreyfoos School of the Arts is a few miles away in downtown West Palm Beach.Visit the zoo at Dreher Park
The cooling splash pad at Bill Moss Hillcrest Paseo sits at the edge of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Rinker Athletic Campus, a 78-acre area that hosts the school’s intramural sports. Lighted fields accommodate baseball and soccer matches, while the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center supports tournaments on its dozen courts. Paved walking paths provide space for neighbors to enjoy nature, although the sounds of the nearby interstate often overpower the songbirds at rush hour. A few blocks away, Vedado Park Community Center invites residents to explore the playground or host a picnic on the lawn. Across Southern Boulevard is Dreher Park, which encompasses the popular Palm Beach Zoo and Cox Science Center and Aquarium along with the city’s first disc golf course and a dog park. It’s common to see birthday balloons tied to a picnic shelter on the weekends or catch anglers casting a line into the lake on cool mornings. And for a day of sun and sand, it’s a short 4-mile trip to the city’s public beaches.Commuters can catch a Palm Tran bus or hop on I-95
Commuters have easy access to Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1, two of the city’s most convenient north-south thoroughfares. Palm Tran buses run throughout the community, offering a 20-mile trip to downtown West Palm Beach about 3 miles away.
