Slow living on the Susquehanna River
West Pittston, known as the Garden Village, is a borough that hugs the Susquehanna River. Homes here date back to the 1800s, and the town has many early American historical sites. A line of cherry blossom trees sits along the Susquehanna River, which has been known to flood, and is the site of an annual cherry blossom festival. Since the borough is only a mile or two across, the middle and high schools are within walking or biking distance from most homes.
Susquehanna Avenue’s century-old homes
West Pittston’s century-old homes along Susquehanna Avenue still have carriage stones etched with the names of former owners. These historic Italianate and Second Empire homes are valued at around $425,000 and $600,000. More contemporary ranch-style and two-story split-level homes cost between $150,000 and $300,000. The oldest home still in the borough is the Newry House, a salt box Colonial supposedly built between 1800 and 1811.

Live alongside West Pittston’s history
“West Pittston is an old town, but we’re lucky it’s been able to maintain its architecture,” says Lu-Ann Sperrazza, a Realtor with Atlas Realty and a native of West Pittston. “People will drive here just to walk around and look at the houses and shops.” Known for being the location of the 1778 Battle of Wyoming during the Revolutionary War, West Pittston has twelve historic sites along its unofficial West Pittston Heritage Trail. The Hitchner Biscuit Company building, once a shortbread cookie manufacturer, is now the site of modern apartments. West Pittston was also recently dubbed “Halloween Town,” after drawing thousands of trick-or-treaters to its streets to see Halloween decor adorning old homes.
