Susquehanna Avenue’s century-old homes
West Pittston’s century-old homes along Susquehanna Avenue still have carriage stones etched with the names of former owners. These historic Italianate and Second Empire homes are valued at around $425,000 and $600,000. More contemporary ranch-style and two-story split-level homes cost between $150,000 and $300,000. The oldest home still in the borough is the Newry House, a salt box Colonial supposedly built between 1800 and 1811.Live alongside West Pittston’s history
“West Pittston is an old town, but we’re lucky it’s been able to maintain its architecture,” says Lu-Ann Sperrazza, a Realtor with Atlas Realty and a native of West Pittston. “People will drive here just to walk around and look at the houses and shops.” Known for being the location of the 1778 Battle of Wyoming during the Revolutionary War, West Pittston has twelve historic sites along its unofficial West Pittston Heritage Trail. The Hitchner Biscuit Company building, once a shortbread cookie manufacturer, is now the site of modern apartments. West Pittston was also recently dubbed “Halloween Town,” after drawing thousands of trick-or-treaters to its streets to see Halloween decor adorning old homes.West Pittston’s walkable sights
Dogs and families alike can enjoy Morris Park, which includes a dog park, playground and basketball courts. Cross the Susquehanna River to hike at the Campbell’s Ledge Outlook Trail and Reservoir Loop. ATVs and motorbikes can scratch up the trails, but hikers say the view from the top is lovely. West Pittston is also only 8 miles from Frances Slocum State Park, which has 10 miles of trails and is a popular camping destination.Stroll and eat along Luzerne Avenue
Local favorite and family owned, Agolino’s serves up traditional Italian cuisine on Luzerne Avenue. Walk up the road to the Ballyhoo ice cream parlor and order at the antique till and old-fashioned candy counter. Half a mile down the street is Weiner World, serving hot dogs, hoagies, hamburgers and fries. To run errands, residents drive to Insalaco's Shopping Center, which has several retail shops including Gerrity’s, a grocery store with deli meats and fresh produce. It’s also only a four-mile drive into Pittston to shop at Walmart, Home Depot and Aldi.Cherry blossoms on the west bank
To kick off the spring season, locals flock to the west bank of the Susquehanna River to view the cherry blossom trees in bloom. Accompanied by booths, vendors, live music and a parade, the annual West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival is a great experience for residents and tourists alike. Locals and businesses can take part in the parade and connect with their neighbors as spring arrives. “It’s that kind of town, everyone knows each other,” says Jaqueline DeLucca, Circulation Coordinator of West Pittston Library who has lived in town her whole life. “We’ve got a good mix of new people moving in and those who have been here forever.”Wyoming Area School District
West Pittston students may start their education at Wyoming Area Kindergarten Center, rated B on Niche. The Wyoming Area Primary Center, which has a C-Plus, teaches first through third grade. For grades four through six, Wyoming Area Intermediate Center is rated a C and is within walking distance from most homes. The Wyoming Area Secondary Center is the local high school, earning a C-plus, and their Wyoming Warriors football team plays at Stadium Exeter on Boston Avenue.Bike around the borough
