Community closeness with proximity to the city

“Despite being very close to the city, you get a lot of neighborhood connection here – it’s the sort of place where someone will have snow blown your sidewalk before you get a chance,” says West St. Paul City Councilor John Justen. The city prides itself on supporting its local businesses and tending to its ample greenspaces. “We have a really strong independent business community, and we have a lot of parks for such a densely packed city,” says Justen, who is also the owner of Eclipse Music, a town anchor of over 40 years and one of three independent music stores in five square miles.

Local eateries and shops

Take a ride down Robert Street, the main business district in West St. Paul, and stop in for essentials at Target or Lowe’s. Then head east over to The Pizza Shop, a local hot spot. If you’re in the mood for a beer with your pizza, there’s Tapper’s Pub, which has been recently renovated from your typical neighborhood dive to a friendly favorite. “They make a Cony Island pizza, which is actually really good,” Justen says. “It has hotdogs and onions and mustard.” Looking for a good read? Swing by the independent used book seller Other Skies Weird Fiction, a niche store that specializes in fine, rare, or out-of-print horror, science fiction, fantasy and illustration books. “This guy just had a dream, started a bookstore and it seems to be going really well,” Justen says.

Variety of homes with great curb appeal

The real estate market in West St. Paul is active and appeals to a wide range of budgets. With its older homes, sidewalks and tree-lined streets, the northern end of the city has the vibe of residential St. Paul, and at the southern end, it’s more cul-de-sacs and suburban. The median sale price was $542,000, but properties can sell for under $200K to over $1 million. A 2 bedroom, 1 bath condo recently sold for $195,000 and a 4 bedroom, 5 bath Millennium house sold for $1.15 million in June 2022. “In the neighborhood I’m in, most of the homes were built between the 1920s and 1940s, so you get a 1,400-square-foot house that’s been well-maintained and may have had one or two owners in its history,” Justen says. “That’s a really great opportunity for a first-time homebuyer.” There isn’t much new construction in West St. Paul due to the established nature of the area, but there is town house development underway, with a special focus on keeping seniors in the community.

Nearby magnet and public schools

For public schools in the neighborhood, parents have two exceptional magnet schools: Garlough Environmental, grades K-5, and Heritage E-STEM, grades 5-8. “We picked Garlough because they’re committed to getting the kids outside as much as possible,” Justen says. “They’re going to school in boots and snow pants because they’re going to be out there making snow caves.” At Heritage E-STEM, teachers use projects and field experiences related to the environment to help students learn in new and interesting ways. Students might attend Two Rivers High School afterward, which has an A-minus Niche grade.

Spend the day outdoors

Across the street from Garlough, accessible by an underground tunnel, is the Dodge Nature Center. The nature center operates as a nonprofit on over 460 acres, with a footprint that stretches three communities. They have a boardwalk through a swampy area, trails through the woods and a barn with pigs and chickens.” A couple times a week, kids from the elementary school cross under the street and go into the woods to meet the baby animals and be one with nature,” Justen says. On the far west side of town is Thompson County Park, which underwent a massive renovation in 2021. “It’s a really thoughtful, well-thought-out park,” Justen says. The update includes a new accessible playground, plaza areas, water access via a dock and a lake loop. The lake itself is surrounded by a well-maintained walkway that is fully lighted and enhanced with a series of story-telling plaques that explain the local wildlife and the native people that once lived on the land.

Explore West St. Paul

Explore West St. Paul is a three-day event put on by the city in June that brings neighbors together at several locations around the city. “We have two bands playing this year – one that’s sort of for the kids and another more for the adults,” Justen says. The celebration also includes fireworks, an art and environmental fair, and a popular parade. The city encourages businesses in the neighborhood to tie in events with Explore West St. Paul. “We really try to keep things humming along with recreational activities,” he says.

Easy access to the Twin Cities

St. Paul is easily accessible for residents with proximity to local roads like Robert Street and US-52. The city is conveniently located about 5 miles from downtown St. Paul and 13 miles from Minneapolis.
