West Saint Paul is a creative Twin Cities suburb with a rich community
West Saint Paul makes a name for itself with its creative energy and close community. Locals know the city for its eclectic shops and boutiques, which range from antique bookstores to artist markets, and its many, many parks. You can easily get to the Twin Cities, with downtown Saint Paul less than 5 miles away and downtown Minneapolis about 15 miles away.

A variety of homes cost less than Mendota Heights
“There’s a huge sense of community,” says city councilman John Justen, who has lived in West Saint Paul since 2008. “Everybody, in every city, wants to talk about ‘the guy next to me who shoveled my snow one time.’ But I feel like this community embodies that in a way that I haven’t seen in a lot of the other places.” This closeness is even reflected in the city’s layout. Justen says that the houses are packed tight, but that brings neighbors together. Older homes include cottages, bungalows and Tudor Revivals from the early 1900s. You’ll see more mid-20th-century ranch-style houses and New Traditional styles built as recently as the 2020s as you move farther south.
Realtor Rick Bean with the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results, who has been working in and around Saint Paul for over 15 years, says that the price point is part of the city’s draw. The median single-family price is significantly less expensive than in Mendota Heights, and property taxes are lower than in the Twin Cities. Homes range from mid-$100,000s to the low $600,000s, while townhouses and condos cost between the low $100,000s and the mid-$400,000s. Nearly half of the residents rent.
Early-1900s homes are common.

Local businesses highlight West Saint Paul’s creative spirit
Part of the city’s charm comes from its shops and restaurants. “We have a crazily strong small business community in West Saint Paul,” says Justen, who also owns Eclipse Music, which has been selling guitars and accessories for over 40 years. Some other businesses include:
Other Skies Weird Fiction, a bookstore specializing in rare horror and sci-fi
Poppy & Wonderments, which sells art from over 40 local artists
5 – 8 Grill and Tap, a Minnesota staple known for its Juicy Lucy burger
Mela Thai, which serves Thai and Chinese food
FoodSmith, a bistro and pub that blends Austrian and American cuisine
These local spots really highlight West Saint Paul’s “focus on being quirky and unique and a little weird,” Justen says. “It’s something we’re leaning into because it comes from the community we have... We have a very interesting mix of people who live in our city. A lot of creative people, a lot of artists, a lot of strange shops.”

Students can apply to magnet schools in the highly rated District 197
West Saint Paul is one of several suburbs in the highly rated District 197. While students typically attend their assigned schools, they can apply to magnet programs, such as the one at Garlough Environmental Magnet School. “We picked Garlough because they’re committed to getting the kids outside as much as possible,” Justen says. “They’re going to school in boots and snow pants because they’re going to be out there making snow caves.”
Heritage E-STEM serves students in grades five through eight.
Two Rivers High School is highly rated.

You can easily get to the Twin Cities
Robert Street, the city's main drag, offers a straight shot into Downtown Saint Paul, about 15 minutes away. You have easy access to Interstates 94 and 494, which lead to downtown Minneapolis in 30 minutes. “I would say the vast majority of people own a car,” Bean says. “But if you live close to Robert, there’s walkable stuff.” Public transportation is available through Metro Transit buses and the developing G Line, a bus rapid transit line along Robert.

City parks and Dodge Nature Center offer outdoor fun
Justen says West Saint Paul is working hard to give each of the many city parks its own identity. Options include:
Thompson County Park, which has lakefront walking trails and an ADA-accessible playground
Kennedy Park, which is known for its sledding hill
The sports complex, with amenities like softball and soccer fields and a hiking trail
The ice arena, which is open for skating and hockey every week
Or, you can head out into the wilderness at Dodge Nature Center. The main campus spans 110 acres, including miles of hiking trails and a farm. It’s a popular destination for field trips and even hosts summer camps and preschool programs. Justen says it’s a must-see every time a friend comes in from out of town. “They’re always like, ‘How does this exist in the middle of your city?” he says.
Dodge Nature Center has a mission to provide exceptional experiences in nature through environmental education.

Explore West Saint Paul Days reintroduces residents to the city
Explore West Saint Paul Days is an annual celebration that encourages residents to rediscover their home. You can always expect a parade and live music, but local businesses will host changing pop-up events that encourage people to get involved in the community. “We’re trying to push you to get out of your comfort zone and go to places you haven’t been before," Justen says. "You might find something you never knew existed that you really love.”
