The birthplace of the state fair
More than a decade before the United States officially existed, a group of Pennsylvanians got together and hosted a two-day agricultural market held on the town square about 2 miles west of present-day York. It was the first of what became an annual event in the area, and the idea caught on across the country. Anyone who has ever played a game on the midway or scarfed down fried food before jumping on a roller coaster at a state fair anywhere in the US owes a debt of gratitude to those folks who organized the first state fair in 1765, a tradition lives on today every fall at the York Expo Center located in the borough of West York. And while history is definitely an important aspect of life in West York, one of the primary appeals is the neighborhood’s location paired with lower home prices than what they’d expect to find elsewhere in the area. “People who live in West York tend to be looking for that combination of affordability and convenience,” says Realtor Colin Boyer, who has several years of experience representing sales in the area.

More than 160 events are scheduled at the center annually, ranging from motorcycle and street rod car shows to trade shows and other spectator events. Local kids who have some energy to burn can work it off at Slagel Park Playground, where they have access to multiple playground apparatuses, as well as plenty of open space to run around in. When neighborhood residents are in need of a little Zen, they find their center at Fire Life Yoga, a yoga studio centrally located on Lincoln Highway. Residents can also go to nearby Planet Fitness in the Carlisle Commerce Center for a little more cardio-themed workout.
