Westfield offers rural charm in Lake Erie’s Concord Grape Belt

Westfield is a small town in Lake Erie’s Concord Grape Belt, a 60-mile stretch known as the largest Concord grape-growing region in the world. Once called the Grape Juice Capital of the World, it became home to Welch’s first grape-juice plant in 1897. Though no longer the company’s headquarters, Westfield remains an agricultural community with vineyards, wineries and events that cultivate its grape-growing heritage.

Rows of green grapevines surround the independent village of Westfield, a walkable town center with shops, restaurants and historic red-brick buildings. “Westfield is a cute, little, sought-after town,” says Mary Ford, an associate broker with ERA Team VP Real Estate who has more than 30 years of experience selling homes. “There are beautiful old houses, a vibrant downtown and seasonal produce in the summer. It’s very Americana.” Along with its rural charm and quaint village center, Westfield offers lakefront recreation that draws homebuyers looking for a quiet community rooted in nature.

Wineries, festivals and grape growers near the Grape Discovery Center

Residents can sample Concord grapes at spots like Johnson Estate Winery, the state’s longest continuously operating estate winery. It’s also one of many stops on the 50-mile-long Lake Erie Wine Trail. In mid-September, the Westfield Grape and Wine Festival celebrates the grape harvesting season with themed activities for all ages. A grape stomping contest encourages friendly competition, while wine tasting workshops highlight the region’s terroir. The festival also includes educational activities at the Grape Discovery Center, the official visitor’s center for the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt. Agricultural tourism is essential to the town’s economy, and companies like Mogen David Wine Corporation and Growers’ Co-op Grape Juice Company grow their grapes in Westfield.
