Easygoing in Westmere, but equally suburban and rural
Greater Albany's Westmere-North Bethlehem neighborhood offers an exurb community in upstate New York. The hamlet is a part of the town of Guilderland and gives residents plenty of chances to shop and eat out, while providing wide open spaces to live in and call home. Westmere forms the region's northern section, abutted to the south by North Bethlehem. The suburban streets of Westmere promise quiet and contained residential pockets. The neighborhood’s east end is bordered by Interstate 87 and Albany’s quintessential suburbs, which Realtor Michael Heinel calls “a quiet, walkable area with lots of cul-de-sacs, near a hospital and nursing school.”

Ranches and Modern Traditional homes in the $300k range
Western Avenue is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, so homebuyers who start here will see ranch and Cape Cod styles along the connecting side streets. These homes form the base of the housing stock and range from low $200,000s to high $600,000s. Farther south, homebuyers will find modest ranches along with farmhouses with wraparound porches and custom brick builds on multiple acres of land. These spacious homes run about $2.2 million. Other styles include brick and vinyl townhouse units from the 80s, starting around $300,000, as well as three-bedroom Modern Traditional homes from the 2020s, featuring an open unfenced yard and a $400,000 price point.

Advanced music classes at Guilderland High
Kids start at Westmere Elementary School, which has close to 450 students. Extracurricular activities include intramural sports, orchestra and chorus. After 6th grade, students attend Farnsworth Middle School, then on to Guilderland High School. Both of these schools earn very high marks from Niche, across a range of categories, including an A-minus overall. The high school's award-winning music department offers advanced classes, such as music theory and music technology. Other extracurriculars, such as the student newspaper, have also been recognized by state awards. Niche gives the school an A-minus in clubs and activities.
Peaceful times at North Bethlehem Park
Tucked away along the eastern edge of the region, North Bethlehem Park features a playground, and trails for walking and mountain biking. It's also a great place for picnicking and basketball games. For more athletic fun, residents can swing by Capital Hills at Albany, an 18-hole course that’s lauded for its varied terrain.
Restaurant buzz on Western Avenue
Shopping and dining life buzzes along Western Avenue, which is trafficked by public buses. This main thoroughfare and commercial center is lined with strip malls, retail plazas and professional services. Restaurants dotting the landscape offer steak, seafood, sushi and tapas. Capital City Diner is a no-frills joint with many loyal patrons who come for tried-and-true American fare — eggs over easy with sausage and grits or cheeseburgers and milkshakes. For something a bit swankier, customers travel east along the avenue and ask for a table at Athos Restaurant. A delicious Mediterranean dinner — and perhaps a selection from its wine cellar — will be served on crisp tablecloths in this upscale Greek eatery. Crossgates Mall, the biggest mall in the Albany region, is in the neighborhood's northeast corner.

Two interstates nearby
Besides the central importance of Route 20, also known as Western Avenue, this neighborhood has interstate 87 running along the east end. Westmere-North Bethlehem is also in the part of Albany where Interstate 90 converges with Route 20 – offering residents a number of ways to get around the metropolitan area. Otherwise, gently curving roads and quiet cul-de-sacs frequently offer walkable experiences.
