Split Rock
Suburban Neighborhood in Westvale, New York
Onondaga County 13031, 13215
21st-century subdivisions
“It’s very much your typical suburban community,” says Karen BenYehuda, a local Realtor with Enlighten Realty, who services Split Rock and has over 25 years of experience in the industry. “You have housing developments with a contemporary feel and some older subdivisions.” Split Rock’s newer housing developments feature spacious, New Traditional homes and classic Colonial Revivals. Properties often sit on lot sizes around half an acre, with prices ranging from the $300,000s to the $500,000s. Other streets give way to ranch-style and split-level houses built in the mid-1900s, priced from the $200,000s to the $300,000s, with renovated homes selling on the higher end. Partly due to its rural landscape, residents enjoy a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4. Syracuse is known for its heavy snowfall, with the region averaging over 100 inches of snow per year, so residents should be prepared for a long winter.Tunnel explorations at Split Rock Quarry
Though left in ruins, the Split Rock Quarry is a unique place to visit. The quarry’s large stone crusher still stands along with abandoned tunnels ready to be explored. The old quarry is also popular among mountain bikers, featuring trails throughout the 1,000-acre site surrounded by natural brush. “There are some trails around the neighborhood that are like hidden gems,” BenYehuda says. “And they lead right to King Memorial Park.” Along Split Rock Road, King Memorial Park features tennis and basketball courts, a playground, ball fields and even a sand volleyball court. Those looking for a different kind of greenery can dive 2 miles to the members-only Bellevue Country Club or explore one of the many lakes around the region. “Split Rock is fairly close to Skaneateles Lake,” Li says, the crown jewel of the Finger Lakes region. “And to the east, we have Cazenovia Lake. Outdoor recreation is a big thing around here.” Funcity Adventure Park is another spot to take the kids on a rainy day.Dual enrollment at West Genesee High
The West Genesee Central School District serves the community. Kindergarten through fourth-grade students may attend Split Rock Elementary School, which scores an A-minus rating on Niche. Fifth and sixth graders may attend West Genesee Intermediate School, earning a B-plus, before moving on to Camillus Middle, also a B-plus-rated school. West Genesee High School earns an A-minus and offers dual enrollment programs where students can earn college credits from Onondaga Community College and Syracuse University. The West Genesee Wildcats also have stellar sports programs, with the ice hockey team winning the state championship in 2023.Events at the SRC Arena and FCU Amphitheater
The 60,000-square-foot SRC Arena and Events Center is just a few miles away at Onondaga Community College. Along with college athletics, the facility hosts several events throughout the year, from trade shows to concerts. In nearby Fairmount, the Town of Camillus Summer Concert Series features live music from local artists on Monday evenings throughout July. Beforehand, locals can check out the seasonal farmers market. Apart from downtown events like Syracuse’s iconic Winterfest, Split Rock residents are only 5 miles south of the Great New York State Fair and the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview.5 mile drive to Downtown Syracuse
Split Rock, Howlett Hill and Harris roads run through the community. Bus stops are scattered along Howlett Hill Road, but most of the community is car-dependent. It’s about a 5-mile drive on back roads to Downtown Syracuse, with a few traffic lights along the way. Upstate Community Hospital is less than 4 miles away along Onondaga Road, and Interstate 81 leads about 9 miles northeast to Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Split Rock has no major highways, so traffic is typically easy-going, but nearby thoroughfares include U.S. Route 5 and Interstates 690 and 90.Upscale and casual dining around Split Rock
Split Rock residents can head about 5 miles northwest to Camillus Commons for weekly grocery trips at TOPS Friendly Markets. The shopping center is also home to Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and small restaurants like Second Chance Diner for brunch and mimosas. More retailers like Target, PetSmart and HomeGoods are down the road. Wegmans is also 2 miles east next to Limp Lizard Lounge Bar & Grill, a favorite for barbecue and Tex-Mex. Closer to home, TK on the Hill is the local watering hole known for its weekly live music, classic pub fare and cold beers. The Cider Mill features an outdoor patio and intimate atmosphere for weekly date nights, and Abbott’s Frozen Custard is a crowd favorite. Locals can also explore hidden gems scattered between farmland 4 miles south along West Seneca Turnpike, like the beloved diner Finally Ours and Red Hawk Brewing.
