Rural residential hamlet with an abandoned quarry
Split Rock is famously known for a 1918 explosion at the Split Rock Quarry called the “Disaster at Split Rock.” Today, the 1,000-acre site destroyed by the TNT blast is open to the public for tunnel and trail explorations. The small hamlet is predominantly a residential community on the cusp of farmland. “It’s more of a rural area with acres and acres of land,” says Susan Li, associate broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties, who has 22 years of experience in the industry and lives in neighboring Camillus. “It’s mainly just homes and farmland.” However, Split Rock residents can enjoy the peaceful pastoral setting, with everyday amenities just 5 miles away.
21st-century subdivisions
“It’s very much your typical suburban community,” says Karen BenYehuda, a local Realtor with Enlighten Realty, who services Split Rock and has over 25 years of experience in the industry. “You have housing developments with a contemporary feel and some older subdivisions.” Split Rock’s newer housing developments feature spacious, New Traditional homes and classic Colonial Revivals. Properties often sit on lot sizes around half an acre, with prices ranging from the $300,000s to the $500,000s. Other streets give way to ranch-style and split-level houses built in the mid-1900s, priced from the $200,000s to the $300,000s, with renovated homes selling on the higher end. Partly due to its rural landscape, residents enjoy a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4. Syracuse is known for its heavy snowfall, with the region averaging over 100 inches of snow per year, so residents should be prepared for a long winter.
Craftsman styled New Traditional homes have the largest demand in Split Rock.

Tunnel explorations at Split Rock Quarry
Though left in ruins, the Split Rock Quarry is a unique place to visit. The quarry’s large stone crusher still stands along with abandoned tunnels ready to be explored. The old quarry is also popular among mountain bikers, featuring trails throughout the 1,000-acre site surrounded by natural brush. “There are some trails around the neighborhood that are like hidden gems,” BenYehuda says. “And they lead right to King Memorial Park.” Along Split Rock Road, King Memorial Park features tennis and basketball courts, a playground, ball fields and even a sand volleyball court. Those looking for a different kind of greenery can dive 2 miles to the members-only Bellevue Country Club or explore one of the many lakes around the region. “Split Rock is fairly close to Skaneateles Lake,” Li says, the crown jewel of the Finger Lakes region. “And to the east, we have Cazenovia Lake. Outdoor recreation is a big thing around here.” Funcity Adventure Park is another spot to take the kids on a rainy day.
