Wewahitchka: A town of lakes, rivers and tupelo honey
In the land of freshwater lakes and tupelo honey lies the community of Wewahitchka. The name means "water eyes" in Seminole and comes from its two eye-shaped water features, Lake Alice and Lake Julia. According to Realtor and broker Jay Rish with Rish Real Estate Group, the laid-back town is known for its ecotourism. "It's close to the Chipola River and the Dead Lakes, which are very popular for fishing, boating and rural camping," Rish says. "It's also only 20 minutes from the Gulf, so you can be at the coast reasonably without having the beachfront prices." Even more than its proximity to the water, Wewahitchka is known for its major export: tupelo honey. "The tupelo trees are indigenous here in our river swamps, and when they bloom, the bees create a honey that's very sweet and never granulates. It's nationally known as some of the best honey you'll ever taste," Rish says. Rish's family has worked in the tupelo honey industry for over a century.

Lake Alice Park, the Dead Lakes and the annual Tupelo Honey Festival
The community’s main green space is Lake Alice Park. It features a small green lawn, plus a dock for fishing and kayak or canoe launching. Lake Alice is also home to the annual Tupelo Honey Festival, as Rish notes. Each May, the community celebrates its harvest with local beekeepers offering honey and honey-based products. There is also live music, food vendors and arts and crafts vendors. Just 4 miles south, pet-friendly Honeyville Park and Community Center offers a playground, a treehouse, athletic fields and picnic areas. Wewahitchka is only 3 miles from the Dead Lakes, a popular boating and bass fishing location. The lake has cypress tree skeletons and tupelo trees, making for challenging fishing excursions and scenic photo opportunities. The Apalachicola River Wildlife Area nearby provides more areas for visitors to hunt, fish, camp, kayak and hike along the winding Apalachicola River. Numerous white sand beaches are between 25 and 40 miles away. Options include quiet local favorites like St. Joe Beach and busy tourist areas like Panama City Beach. While Wewahitchka does not endure the storm surge experienced by those beach towns, it does often face heavy rain and damaging winds from tropical weather.

New Traditional homes and waterfront properties in Wewahitchka
Tranquil lakes, grassy marshes and forests of tupelo, orange and Spanish moss-draped oaks trees surround Wewahitchka. Homes are on quiet, woodsy streets with modest lots that give a southern suburbia feel. Most houses here are manufactured or ranch-style homes, priced between $70,000 and $200,000. Moving outward from the town's main road, there are larger New Traditional homes, some recently constructed. Occasionally, houses on one of the lakes or the nearby Chipola River are available, providing daily access to fishing, boating and kayaking. Recent construction and waterfront homes typically range between $200,000 and $400,000. "Homes here are better value, because you're not far from the coast but you can get a cheaper price and, potentially, a larger parcel," Rish says.

There is a Dollar General and a David Rich's IGA for groceries, but other retail options are limited.
