Farmland around the falls

Niagara locals have one shared bragging right: the most photographed natural landmark in the world is right in their backyard. Beyond the roaring waterfalls and tourists, Niagara has a surprising amount of farmland and rural space surrounding Niagara Falls International Airport.

Surprisingly rural Niagara

Long rural roads lead to Cape Cods, brick split levels and four-square homes with attached garages, most often built between the 1950s and 1970s. Niagara in Wheatfield offers acreage for gardening and farming at a lower price, often between $140,000 and $160,000, than other rural spots across New York.

Niagara falls into learning

Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District continues to work on an Eco-Campus Revitalization Project, a 1.8-mile trail and creek running through the middle and high school properties. Niagara’s youngest can attend Colonial Village Elementary School and Edward Town Middle School, which earn C-minus and B-plus Niche scores, respectively. Niagara Wheatfield High School, with an A-minus Niche rating, has a low student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1.

Lake Erie and Ontario are 2 miles away

While most of the natural appeal of Niagara lies in Niagara Falls, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, locals are often seen taking walks and playing a round of mini golf at Veterans Memorial Park just 2 miles away. Families and friends bring pillows, blankets and lawn chairs out on warmer weekend nights for an outdoor movie night hosted by Niagara Arts & Cultural Center off Pine Avenue. Saturday yoga sessions, board game nights and wine tastings are also popular at Freedom Run Winery in nearby Lockport. Several other attractions nearby include Whirlpool State Park and De Veaux Woods State Park.

Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA

A variety of restaurants appear in clusters along Niagara Falls Boulevard. Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is a large mall with chain restaurants, such as Applebee’s and LongHorn Steakhouse, and well-known brands like Nike, Kate Spade and the COACH Outlet. The mall also offers grocery stores, like ALDI, Walmart, Target and Wegmans. Local options include De Dee’s, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that serves large sundaes. Less than a mile away from the mall on Military Road is The Griffon Gastropub, and equal distance, the opposite way on Cayuga Drive, is the popular Mexican restaurant, El Cubilete. Close to the shore on Buffalo Avenue is Sunshine Café, a hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot, and Jaco’s Pizza and Restaurant. LaSalle Vineyard is a local favorite with community gardens that provide fresh produce in the warmer months and walkable to Amy & Co. Coffee Shop. Badding Bros Farmers Market is open all week long, a popular spot for local and organic produce.

Getting around Niagara

Most commute by car; however, residents are still within walking distance of much of Buffalo, and the city has an extensive public transit bus throughout town. The Amtrak Niagara Falls Station is located 6 miles away on Depot Avenue. Nearby major roads include LaSalle Expressway and Interstate 190, and Niagara Falls International Airport is 3 miles away, so residents might experience varying noise levels.
