Whitesboro is a suburban village with restaurants and access to Utica
Whitesboro puts convenience first. The suburban Oneida County village keeps its residents near necessities, with shopping centers, restaurants and businesses lining Oriskany Boulevard. Green spaces and highly rated schools are nearby, and community events are regularly thrown. More fun can be found in nearby towns like Whitestown and New York Mills, or in Downtown Utica. “It has pretty much everything you could ever need,” says Kate Despins, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Sexton Real Estate who lives in New York Mills.
Traditional and multifamily homes along walkable streets
The community has older, traditional homes, including Cape Cod and ranch-style houses. These often run from $105,000 to $250,000. There are a handful of multifamily properties that can range from $130,000 to $245,000. “There are some absolutely gorgeous older homes that have been rehabbed, and some that still need to be rehabbed,” Despins says. Sidewalks usually flank the area’s asphalt streets, even smaller residential ones. Roads are curvy and can rise and fall with the region’s hills. Yards are grassy and typically feature small bushes near the home. Some have medium to large trees. Dense woods and hills surround the village.
Whitesboro Central School District gets high marks from Niche
Students are served by the Whitesboro Central School District. Westmoreland Road Elementary School earns a C-plus Niche rating. Sixth graders attend Parkway Middle School, which holds an A-minus score, and grades 7-8 go to Whitesboro Middle School, which gets a B-plus. Whitesboro High School offers five pre-engineering classes through Project Lead the Way, a program affiliated with the Rochester Institute of Technology. It receives a B-plus rating.
Heavy show and a risk of flooding, but with access to Interstate 90
Homes near Sauquoit Street, Ellis Avenue and David Avenue can experience flooding from Sauquoit Creek. Despins says the area often gets heavy snowfall during the winter, and residents are advised to shovel their rooftops or risk a collapse.
Interstate 90 cuts through the community, as does New York State Route 69, known locally as Oriskany Boulevard. A railroad runs across the community near the Mohawk River. Centro Utica Route 11 buses make several stops along Main Street. Downtown Utica is nearly 4 miles away, where entertainment options include the Utica Comets, an American Hockey League team affiliated with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils. Utica’s Wynn Hospital has close to 375 beds. Syracuse Hancock International Airport is around a 50-mile drive. Centro route 11 buses make several stops along Main Street.
Nearby parks provide sports courts and view of the Erie Canal
Flagg Street Playground has a jungle gym, a swing set, a basketball court and a baseball and softball diamond. Whitesboro Fire Department Memorial Park also has youth ball fields. Nearby Lock 20 State Canal Park Lock provides a walking trail, picnic spots and views of the Erie Canal. Campsites sit on the north side of the water. A few miles south, Twin Ponds Golf & Country Club takes public tee times for its 18-hole golf course and hosts weddings and other special events. Churches like Whitesboro Presbyterian Church sit near Main Street.
Diners, cafes and upside-down pizza along Oriskany Boulevard
Many restaurants sit along Oriskany Boulevard, including Boulevard Diner & Bake Shop, which serves classic American entrees for breakfast, lunch and dinner. City Cafe has an all-day fried fish menu on Fridays. Joe’s Pizza offers fresh pies and take-and-bake versions to make at home. Trio’s Pizza, in nearby New York Mills, is another popular option. “Joe’s and Trio’s serve upside-down pizza, with the crust, then cheese, then the sauce,” Despins says. “Eat it quickly because it gets cold. The cheese doesn’t hold in the heat.” There are also numerous auto shops and retailers like Thread of Life, a thrift store, along Oriskany Boulevard. The community has a Dollar General and a Dollar Tree but no dedicated grocery store; the closest one is Aldi in Yorkville, around 2 miles away.
Summer concerts on village green and Fall Family Fest
The community hosts a summer concert series each year on the village green. Family Fall Fest combines food trucks, family activities, soccer tournaments and displays from law enforcement organizations. The annual Whitestown Community Fun Night, at nearby Whitetown Town Park, blends live music, outdoor movies and a fireworks display.
