Whitestown is a spread-out community with access to several amenities
Whitestown has what its residents need. The Oneida County town’s communities are all within a few miles of one another, meaning everything is close when needed, including parks, grocery stores and restaurants — particularly Italian eateries. Kate Despins, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Sexton Real Estate who lives in nearby New York Mills, says the area is known for having a pizza place on (almost) every corner, all of which put their own spin on the dish. “It’s amazing how different pizza can taste when it’s literally three ingredients,” Despins says. The community is split between several school districts and is a short drive from Downtown Utica, which has even more dining and entertainment options.
New Traditional and multifamily homes are surrounded by green hills
Trees, hills and farmland dominate the landscape outside the area’s villages and hamlets. New Traditional homes can range from $330,000 to $650,000. Older traditional houses, including ranch-style properties, often run from $200,000 to $570,000. Multifamily homes usually sell between $125,000 and $310,000. “Everything is blended together, and you get to know a lot of people,” Despins says. The community’s asphalt residential roads sometimes lack lane lines and are narrow within hamlets. Main thoroughfares like New York State Route 69 can have sidewalks. Yard sizes vary by location, but generally feature bushes and trees.
Pizza parlors, diners, bars and plenty of grocery stores
Capri Pizzeria bakes Sicilian-style pies, and Stockdale’s Bar and Grill has a substantial craft beer menu. Other restaurants are near the community in villages like Whitesboro and New York Mills. Boulevard Diner & Bake Shop serves classic American food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Symeon’s Greek Restaurant has fed customers traditional entrees since 1973. Franco’s Pizza is known for its chargrilled wings. “Usually wings are saturated in sauce and messy and leaking all over your face and hands,” Despins says. “These have a different flavor. There’s nothing wet about them. They are dry and absolutely delicious.” Whitestown has a Dollar General, and stores like Hannaford, Aldi, Target and Walmart can be found in New Hartford, around 7 miles from Oriskany.
The community is split between three school districts with high marks
Several school districts serve the area. Many students are zoned for the Oriskany Central School District, which holds a B-minus Niche grade. Some southeastern students are served by the Whitesboro Central School District, which earns a B-plus score. Whitesboro High School offers five pre-engineering classes through Project Lead the Way, a program affiliated with the Rochester Institute of Technology. It earns an individual B-plus grade. A handful of households to the northwest and southwest are zoned for the Westmoreland Central School District, which receives a B rating.
Sports complexes, golf clubs and the Oriskany Battlefield site
Whitestown Town Park has tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, baseball and softball diamonds, a football field, a skateboarding area and two playgrounds. Whitestown Ice Arena gives residents a place to ice skate and play hockey. Accelerate Sports is a youth and adult sports leagues hub, with turf fields, hardwood courts, batting cages, bullpens and a fitness center. Oriskany Hills Golf Club takes public tee times for its nine-hole course, as does Shamrock Golf & Country Club for its 18-hole course.
The Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site gives visitors information on the 1777 Battle of Oriskany, part of the Saratoga campaign that changed the course of the Revolutionary War. The Oriskany Museum shares the region's history and hosts the local farmers' market from mid-June through late September. Just outside the community are the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River. Lock 20 State Canal Park provides views of the Erie’s waters, a walking trail and picnic spots. There are campsites on the north side of the canal. Churches like Trinity United Methodist Church are spread throughout the community.
Whitestown Community Fun Night brings people together
Whitesboro hosts a summer concert series each year on its village green. Its Family Fall Fest combines food trucks, family activities, soccer tournaments and displays from law enforcement organizations. Whitestown Community Fun Night, at Whitetown Town Park, mixes live music, outdoor movies and a fireworks display.
Access to Interstate 90, but prepare for lots of snow
Interstate 90 runs through the area, as do New York state routes 69 and 840. A railroad cuts across the community near the Mohawk River. Downtown Utica is less than 10 miles away. Utica’s Wynn Hospital has nearly 375 beds. Syracuse Hancock International Airport is close to a 50-mile drive. Despins says winters can be mild or harsh depending on the year. “We get lake effect snow, where it just stalls over an area,” Despins says. In bad years, like 2024-2025, the community can receive several feet of snow at one time. Despins says when that happens, residents must shovel their rooftops or else risk a collapse.
