Whitman has a sweet history
Whitman, the birthplace of the chocolate chip cookie from the Toll House Inn, gives residents a sweet life with plenty of parks, restaurants and housing options. Realtor Lew McConkey with Red Barn Realty says, “I’ve lived here for 28 years. Friends and family tend to stay in Whitman.” Residents enjoy a quiet life here, but they don’t have to go far to find hang-out spots for fun with friends or family-friendly activities at nearby parks or cafes. Paved sidewalks line the streets, allowing locals to bike and run.
Family homes, new townhouses and downtown condos
McConkey notes that houses don’t stay listed very long in Whitman these days. “When a standard ranch hits the market, it might be there for a week or so,” he says. The neighborhood features a variety of home styles in Whitman, including ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and restored Cape Cods from the 1830s. Most homes in the area feature four bedrooms, large lots and attached garages that sell for $700,000 to 800,000. Townhouses built as recently as 2022 can be on the market for 450,000 to 500,000. Those looking for rental opportunities can find condos downtown that sit above restaurants and shops.

Outdoor adventures at Whitman Town Park
When the kids aren’t in school, they spend time outside skating at Carousel Family Fun Center or at Whitman Town Park, an excellent spot for walking, enjoying the playground, shooting hoops on the basketball court or practicing a home run swing at the baseball field. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted who designed Central Park. At Hobart Meadow, residents walk and watch wildlife along the 1/3-mile paved trail that connects Essex Street and South Avenue. And even though the Toll House Inn no longer stands, visitors can stop on Bedford Street to see the historical marker.
