Far from the city and close to nature in central Shasta County
For outdoor enthusiasts seeking the quieter side of Shasta County, Oak Run is a satisfying patchwork of farmland, trail-stitched wilderness and winding creeks. Agrarian property and loosely treed open spaces surround private, tucked-away homes. Its few residential properties, often with loads of acreage, share the community with one tiny library, a country store established in 1948 and an elementary school with around 50 students. The rest of life’s errands and outings are within a short driving distance.

Large lots, few homes, between $200,000 and $500,000
Not only are there very few homes in Oak Run, they don’t go up for sale often. It’s the kind of place where homeowners put down roots for fresh air and room to spread out. Midcentury through 1980s homes sit on anywhere from two to 20 acres. Prices depend on home style, acreage and lot features — from $200,000 for a rustic mobile home to $500,000 for a two-story barn-style house. The few lined two-way roads, including Oak Run to Fern Road and Oak Run Road, are asphalt-paved, and homes are secluded down long gravel drives. Unlined roads such as Murphy Lane and Althea Way are noticeably narrow. Dry grasses and random stands of trees flank the roadsides.

The owner even takes special requests because the community counts on the store as the closest place to find essentials. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the “cookhouse” opens, which means they fire up the outdoor grill and serve burgers at a picnic table. The closest larger-name grocery store is Holiday Market, 15 miles southwest in the Palo Cedro Shopping Center, right by the public high school.
