Small-town charm meets lakefront tourism in Whitney
Whitney is a small town over 60 miles south of Fort Worth, next to its namesake lake that is known as the Getaway Capital of Texas. Established in 1876, Whitney was an agricultural community that grew and shipped cotton via the Houston and Texas Central Railway. It wasn’t until Lake Whitney was built in the 1950s that the town grew to over 1,000 residents and became an attractive tourist destination in Hill County. “It’s a really nice resort area with vacation and retirement homes in a slow-paced country setting,” says Gary Wallace, a local resident and Realtor with Lake Homes Realty. “Between lake activities and lake life, this is a great place to be.”
Two nature parks by Lake Whitney
Lake Whitney State Park has campsites, hiking trails and a boat ramp. McCown Valley Park, also on Lake Whitney, has campgrounds and equestrian trails. Lake-goers can fish for largemouth bass and blue catfish, while others like to go waterskiing and inner tubing . “It’s a very clear lake – you can see 6 to 8 feet down,” Wallace says. “It gets very busy in the summertime.” Whitney City Park has baseball diamonds, soccer fields and a playground on the west side of town, and Whitney Veterans Memorial Park has a monument dedicated to the city’s hometown heroes.
Traditional, Craftsman and ranch-style homes by the lake
Homes in town are well-established and date as far back as the late 1800s; newer builds tend to be closer to the lake and offer more space and acreage. “We have a big selection – it just depends on where you’re at,” Wallace says. Small fixer-upper properties and manufactured homes by the lake range between $25,000 and $100,000, while many Craftsman, traditional and ranch-style homes are $100,000 to $600,000. Custom-built houses with boat docks and marinas on the lake range from $500,000 to $600,000. Farmhouse-style homes can have covered porches, decks and wooded lots with live oak trees, costing between $500,000 to $1 million. Condos in the White Bluff Resort are around $250,000.
Downtown boutiques with lakeside dining
There are many longtime establishments in downtown Whitney in addition to lakeside dining options. Texas Great Country Café & Pie Pantry is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving burgers and homemade pies since 2009, while Tres Hermanos Mexican Restaurant has been offering sizzling fajitas and grilled shrimp for 25 years. Small businesses include A Daughters Dream Boutique, Bless Yer Heart Boutique and Smoking Barrel Gypsy, and the Brazos Street Market has antiques and rare finds. Restaurants by the lake include The Cove Cafe, Shooky’s On The Lake and The Lighthouse Pub, and there are also plenty of local cafes, coffee shops and espresso bars. Produce is available at Brookshires, Dollar General and David’s, a locally owned grocery store.
Pioneer Days and Grinch Fest
The Pioneer Days Festival has been going on for 50 years and features a pie bake-off, costume contest and a parade through downtown. The annual Grinch Festival is held in early December and ends with a Christmas tree lighting following a holiday parade.
Four campuses in Whitney ISD
The Whitney Independent School District earns a B-minus on Niche and has four campuses in town. Whitney Middle School has a Gifted and Talented program and also earns a B-minus. The B-rated Whitney High School has a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a 95% graduation rate. The Heart of Texas Rural Transportation District offers public transportation in town for $1 and to surrounding counties for $2. HealthNow Urgent Care is open for 24 hours. DFW International Airport is around 90 miles north.
