Courtland
Midcentury properties: Ranch-style dwellings, small cottages and more
Like many northeastern Wichita neighborhoods, Courtland saw a great housing boom in the early 1950s, mainly due to the rise of the city's aviation industry. As such, many properties that line the neighborhoods’ curving streets reflect midcentury design trends. Courtland’s subdivisions are filled with single-story constructions that range from sprawling ranch-style dwellings to small brick cottages. Properties often feature small porches, which typically have enough room for a seating area and some potted plants. Large picture windows are another common feature of the homes here. Many residents enjoy concrete driveways and garages, but streets are wide enough for people to park. Prices typically range from $88,000 to just upwards of $250,000, depending on the home’s age, size and location. The median lot size is around 8,300 square feet, so properties sit relatively close together, featuring grassy front lawns that stretch towards the street. A narrow brook meanders through the middle of the neighborhood, so while there are no sidewalks, residents can walk on tree-lined streets along the water.Central Avenue’s many eateries
Courtland residents enjoy easy access to establishments on and around Central Avenue, the community’s northern border. At Happy Teahouse, shoppers sip custom tea blends and can purchase sea moss, which is known for its health benefits. Those craving pizza head to Angelo’s. While this eatery initially shut down in 2006 after 46 years of business, locals liked it so much that they supported a Kickstarter fund, causing Angelo’s to open its doors again. At the nearby Wichita Brewing Company’s east location, patrons enjoy custom craft beers and wood-fired pizza under an exposed ceiling that creates an industrial feel to this brewpub. Locals also have easy access to the Normandy Shopping Center, which features chain restaurants and GreenAcres Market, a health food grocery store. Locals can also pick up groceries at one of the nearby Dillons. For other shopping and dining opportunities, Silvers says many head just a few miles east to the Douglas Design District, an area home to over 500 locally-owned businesses.Wichita Public Schools USD259
Students can enroll in Wichita Public Schools USD259, the largest school district in Kansas. They can attend Hyde Elementary School, which receives a B rating from Niche and is ranked by the educational review site as the No. 36 best public elementary in the Wichita area. This magnet school is a 2024 National Merit School of Excellence Award recipient. It features Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Latchkey before and after school programs. They can then attend Robinson Middle School, which offers AVID and Pre-International Baccalaureate programs. To finish their schooling, they can attend Wichita High School East, where over 2,000 students learn. The school boasts a student-teacher ratio of 15-to-1 and is ranked by Niche as the No. 7 best public high school in the Wichita area. Career and technical education classes like engineering and video production allow students to explore their passions. Both middle and high schools receive B-plus ratings from Niche.Nearby parks, golf courses and a country club
While Courtland is not home to any parks, locals are surrounded by nearby green spaces. Just around half a mile away is the 5.19-acre Cypress Park, which features everything from grassy areas that are perfect for picnics to rocky playground mounds designed by sculptor Dale Eldred. Those wanting a larger outdoor space head 2 miles southwest to the 22-acre College Hill Park. Children run off their energy on the playground, and tennis players can challenge their friends to a match. During the summer, locals can cool off at the park’s pool, and the green space’s paved pathways are popular among runners year-round. Also around 2 miles away is the MacDonald Golf Course, where golfers practice their aim while being surrounded by tall cottonwood trees. Dog lovers can try to spot Jack, the course’s dog that works to control goose populations. The space is home to a youth golf center. Courtland locals will also be just 3.3 miles away from the invite-only Wichita Country Club, which offers members an 18-hole golf course, swimming facilities and much more.
Wichita Transit, city events and commutes to major employers
Most Courtland residents drive, but they can also take advantage of the Wichita Transit bus system. Route 25’s stop on Central Avenue and North Brookside Street gets locals to downtown Wichita in just 25 minutes. They can also get downtown by taking the 3.5-mile-or-so drive via East Douglas Avenue. Since downtown Wichita is so close, locals will be just a short drive away from the city’s many events, including the Old Town Farm and Art Market, which is from April to December, and the nine-day Wichita Riverfest, which typically happens in early June. Courtland’s location also gives locals easy access to some of the city’s major employers, including Wesley Medical Center, which is 2 miles away via East Central Avenue, and Spirit AeroSystems Inc., which is 5.3 miles away via South Oliver Avenue. Locals can take an 11.3-mile drive via U.S. Route 400 to another major employer in the city: Textron Aviation, which sits right by Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.
