Far West Wichita is filled with contemporary dwellings and modern farmhouse estates
Far West’s eastern region has 1990s subdivisions lined with sidewalks, brick façade ranch styles and four-bedroom split levels. Farther west is where homebuyers will find new builds. “Most neighborhoods still in development have lots for sale, and that allows people to choose a floor plan or customize a house,” says Anderson. Off Maple Street, neighborhoods like Talia or Pine Ridge have community pools, private fitness centers and contemporary-style dwellings built within the last five years on half-acre lots. Five-bedroom custom-built country estates can also be found here, often boasting modern farmhouse architecture with half-circle driveways and unfenced parcels as large as 2 acres. Older properties in Far West Wichita start at $300,000, and newer builds can cost upwards of $600,000, a range higher than a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price.Residents can hike through prairie land or practice their putt at the Auburn Hills Golf Course
Far West Wichita has several green spaces, including Meadows Park, where anglers can fish for bluegill from the pond’s grassy shore. As a designated Wichita Wildlife Habitat, 93-acre Swanson Park’s 1-mile looped trail passes through conserved prairie land and over Cowskin Creek. Those looking to play disc golf will find a course at West Millbrook Park off 119th Street, and golfers can play at Auburn Hills Golf Course, designed by Perry Dye in 2001. “About 800 homes were developed around this golf course throughout the early 2000s,” says Anderson. “It’s one of the larger neighborhoods in Far West.” The Ken Shannon Northwest YMCA is on West 21st Street, offering an indoor lap pool and an outdoor waterpark with a lazy river and twisty slides.Goddard Public Schools and a Catholic option
Children south of Central Avenue are in the Goddard Public Schools District. First, they can attend Apollo Elementary, continuing to Discovery Intermediate for fifth through sixth grade and Eisenhower Middle until eighth grade, all of which have an A-minus grade from Niche. Lastly, students may attend B-plus-rated Eisenhower High, where they can join numerous extracurriculars, like powerlifting or the Tigers and Cubs Club, where seniors mentor freshmen and sophomores. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic serves students from prekindergarten through eighth grade; the school and church have been here since 1985, hosting weekly student services plus several weekend options.A car-dependent community 12 miles from Old Town
“It’s the suburbs, so it’s a car-dependent area,” says Anderson. “People have to commute into the city for work.” U.S. Route 400 spans Far West Wichita’s southern region, and a 12-mile drive east on the thoroughfare leads to Old Town. While residents won’t find any public transportation here, other essentials are a quick drive away. For instance, the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is 6 miles away via the highway, and Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa is just off West 21st Street.Food from Orie’s Farm Fresh or numerous nationally known grocery stores
Known for growing 20 varieties of garlic, Orie’s Farm Fresh is a family-owned store on 119th Street that also sells grass-fed lamb and seasonal produce, like heirloom tomatoes, every summer. The Paramount Antique Mall on West Kellogg Drive has over 225 booths brimming with vintage furniture and clothing. Along West Maple Street, there’s a Dillons grocery store and a few locally owned eateries, including the aptly named Maple Street Pizza Company, which has been serving wood-fired pies and sangria carafes since 2013. Next door, Twelve is an upscale seafood and steak spot, while Felipe’s offers Mexican bites and margaritas from their patio overlooking a pond. The intersection at Central Avenue and Maize Road is also home to an Aldi and Walmart Neighborhood Market. Residents will find stores like Ulta Beauty, Eddie Bauers and Old Navy 5 miles north at NewMarket Square.
