Hilltop is just a few miles from downtown wichita.
Affordable neighborhood in Southeast Wichita
As one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the city, “Hilltop is where many people go when they’ve hit bottom in Wichita,” says Pastor Eddy Hall of Hilltop Urban Church. Though Hilltop has a history of challenges, including poverty, with a median household income of less than $36,000, Hall and his congregation of Hilltop neighbors work to help the community during difficult times. “Our people are very involved,” says Hall. “They may not have much money, but they love to give their time.” Along with the church’s community center, locals also spend their days at Friendship Park or shopping and eating out on the neighborhood’s main roads, where public buses are easily accessible.
Homes prices well below the citywide median
The neighborhood was developed in the 1940s to house defense workers during World War II. Though the homes were meant to be demolished after the war, most of them remain standing, and have a median sale price of $88,250, more than $125,000 below the citywide median. They include 700- to 1,400-square-foot ranch-style houses on approximately 0.15-acre lots with chain-link fences in the front and back. It’s common for these homes to need renovations, and those that do sell for around $25,000 to $50,000. Meanwhile, turn-key houses range from $75,000 to $110,000, though some have reached up to $190,000. There are also six-plex townhouses available in the neighborhood’s east side that range from around $20,000 to $50,000, many of which are rentals.

Free meals and clinics at Hilltop Urban Church
Hilltop Urban Church serves as a backbone of the community. The church partners with its anchor tenants connected to the HUB (Hilltop Urban Building). They provide counseling and mentorship services, along with a program to serve homeless men ages 18 to 24. During the last Saturday of each month, Hilltop Urban Church offers free medical, physical therapy and dental clinics, a clothing closet and a free dinner called Manna Meal. On top of these services, the church makes it a point to bring the community together for fun and fellowship. “We do a big block party the last week of June,” says Hall. “It’s put on by all the HUB partners. We have live music, snow cones popcorn and hot dogs. It draws about 350 to 400 people and it’s a way to introduce everyone to what’s going on here.”
Friendship Park steps away from homes
Friendship Park is right in the backyard of some houses, while other homes are no more than a half-mile away. The 2-acre public park features a playground with a padded surface, a basketball court and a lawn. There’s also LW Clapp Park, a former golf course that’s been converted into a disc golf course. For indoor recreation, Hall says many people come to his church to play basketball in the gymnasium. There’s also the Greater Wichita YMCA’s Garvey Sports Center, which also has a basketball court, along with after-school programs.
