Hilltop
Suburban Neighborhood in Wichita, Kansas
Sedgwick County 67218

Homes prices well below the citywide median
The neighborhood was developed in the 1940s to house defense workers during World War II. Though the homes were meant to be demolished after the war, most of them remain standing, and have a median sale price of $88,250, more than $125,000 below the citywide median. They include 700- to 1,400-square-foot ranch-style houses on approximately 0.15-acre lots with chain-link fences in the front and back. It’s common for these homes to need renovations, and those that do sell for around $25,000 to $50,000. Meanwhile, turn-key houses range from $75,000 to $110,000, though some have reached up to $190,000. There are also six-plex townhouses available in the neighborhood’s east side that range from around $20,000 to $50,000, many of which are rentals.Friendship Park steps away from homes
Friendship Park is right in the backyard of some houses, while other homes are no more than a half-mile away. The 2-acre public park features a playground with a padded surface, a basketball court and a lawn. There’s also LW Clapp Park, a former golf course that’s been converted into a disc golf course. For indoor recreation, Hall says many people come to his church to play basketball in the gymnasium. There’s also the Greater Wichita YMCA’s Garvey Sports Center, which also has a basketball court, along with after-school programs.Diverse student body at Wichita Southeast High School
Public school students attend Jefferson Elementary School, Curtis Middle School and Wichita Southeast High School, each of which earns a C-minus grade from Niche. Both Jefferson and Curtis are about 1 mile from Hilltop. The high school, commonly known as Southeast, is one of the largest in the city and is ranked the second-most diverse high school in the state.Free meals and clinics at Hilltop Urban Church
Hilltop Urban Church serves as a backbone of the community. The church partners with its anchor tenants connected to the HUB (Hilltop Urban Building). They provide counseling and mentorship services, along with a program to serve homeless men ages 18 to 24. During the last Saturday of each month, Hilltop Urban Church offers free medical, physical therapy and dental clinics, a clothing closet and a free dinner called Manna Meal. On top of these services, the church makes it a point to bring the community together for fun and fellowship. “We do a big block party the last week of June,” says Hall. “It’s put on by all the HUB partners. We have live music, snow cones popcorn and hot dogs. It draws about 350 to 400 people and it’s a way to introduce everyone to what’s going on here.”Wichita Transit buses easily accessible
Public transportation can easily be reached by foot with Wichita Transit bus stops along Harry Street, Oliver Avenue and Lincoln Street. Hilltop is right by U.S. Route 400, aka Kellogg Avenue, which leads 4 miles to downtown Wichita and 8.5 miles to Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.Local shops and restaurants on Harry Street and Oliver Avenue
Outside the residential area, Hilltop is bounded by the busy junction of Harry Street and Oliver Avenue. Most of the neighborhood’s restaurants are on Harry Street, including Taqueria El Fogon, which serves classic Mexican food. There are a few other multicultural establishments, such as Shanghai, known for its all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, and Pho Ong 8, a Vietnamese restaurant. Jimmie’s Diner is also nearby, offering a retro 1950s atmosphere and all-day breakfast. For shopping, Oliver Avenue has dozens of local businesses at the Parklane Shopping Center, including multiple beauty-supply stores. At Book-A-Holic, locals can find an extensive collection of used books. Grace Market also offers Asian groceries and food to go. Dillons is also just 1 mile away for everyday groceries and household essentials. And it’s a 2-mile drive to Town East Square, an indoor shopping mall with over 100 businesses.
