A convenient Wichita suburb

New Day lies just to the east of downtown Wichita and is a suburban haven with urban convenience. Locals are within 2 miles of most things anyone could need, from shopping at the mall to highway access. The popular Edgemoor Park and Adams Elementary School are only a couple minutes' walk from the split-level and ranch-style homes that line the streets under the shade of local Eastern redbud and Silver maple trees. These features have attracted families from all over, including “a lot of neighborhood kids in the area,” says Jennea Noel, who has been the director of the Edgemoor Rec Center since 2020, “as well as a lot of new mothers with younger kids.”

Wichita’s crescent driveways and split levels

New Day is primarily filled with sprawling ranch-style and split-level homes built in the late 1940s during the city’s aviation production boom. These houses are often adorned with flat or asymmetrical roofs, large picture windows and half-circle driveways. In the more southern part of the neighborhood, streets are lined with quaint national-style homes with side-gabled roofs. Homes in the southern area start around $100,000, which is lower than the city average of $200,000 and can rise to around $500,000 the farther north the residence is.

Year-round fun at Edgemoor Park

Edgemoor Park lies in the center of the neighborhood and is its 25-acre recreational hub. This is due to the multitude of amenities available to residents, from the playset to the splash pad and the open fields that are all around, perfect for games. The park is also home to the concrete Ryan Woodward Memorial Skatepark, a popular spot for beginner and intermediate-level skaters. In the Edgemoor Park recreation center, residents can take classes in fencing, Tae Kwon Do, oil painting and more. “The park can get very busy with residents playing pickleball late into the evening as it is one of the only lighted courts offered by the city,” Noel says.

New Day’s Library and park events

For indoor daily entertainment and indoor learning, the Rockwell Branch of the Wichita Public Library is next to Edgemoor Park. It offers multiple learning circles, story times and technology classes for locals to grow and learn. “Lots of local groups host their events at the park, like churches or organizations for Easter and the 4th of July,” Noel says.

Wichita’s shaded roads and sidewalks

Residents of New Day are less than a 2-mile drive from South Edgemoor Street, one of the main routes for locals to get into downtown Wichita, which also allows for easy access to the greater Wichita area. However, when it comes to recreation, many locals choose to walk around the area, and locals commonly see “plenty of people walking around all the time to get to and from the park or the library,” Noel says. When it comes to trips outside of Kansas, Colonel James Jabara Airport is 6 miles to the northeast and offers flights to the far corners of the United States. The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is 2 miles to the south for residents seeking medical care.

Breweries, pizzas, and sandwiches

There are plenty of local options for New Day residents for dining and drinking. One example is the Wichita Brewing Co. & Pizzeria, which “people like to frequent as it serves their own beers and also serves delicious brick oven pizzas,” Noel says. The brewery is especially well known for its IPAs and Barley Wine, which won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Fest. For a newer place to eat, Red Bird is on the southeastern border of the neighborhood and offers sandwiches as well as being “both a restaurant and a bar,” Noel says. For daily shopping, many locals can head north to the Prairie Village Center for everyday needs or the Aldi 2.1 miles north. Locals are also minutes from additional shopping, with the Towne East Square Mall 2 miles to the southeast.
