North Central
Older single-story homes and new construction in North Central
Along streets laid in a grid-like fashion are typically non-HOA single-story properties built primarily in the first half of the 20th century, many of which are two-bedroom dwellings built in the '40s and '50s. These older properties include National-style rectangular constructions with side-gabled roofs. While some North Central residents enjoy attached garages, many park in their driveways or on streets that are sometimes lined with sidewalks. There are also a couple of traditional ranch-style dwellings and Craftsman bungalows scattered throughout the community, but these are rarer to find. Prices range from $28,000 to $162,000, depending on the property's age, size and condition. On the lower end of the scale are homes needing significant renovations, and on the higher end are some newer, contemporary single-story dwellings that often have small porches and Craftsman-inspired features. Many of the older properties are getting remodeled and renovated, but those searching for a new build can purchase a lot in the area. Lots for sale typically range from 6,000 to nearly 8,000 square feet and go for anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000. Since North Central is home to a few apartment complexes, it's no wonder that just over 60% of residents rent their properties here.
Wichita Transit and commutes
While many locals drive, they can also take advantage of Wichita Transit bus systems, including Route 28. Many residents work outside the neighborhood at nearby companies, including Wesley Medical Center, which is just around 1.5 miles away. Some may work at one of the many churches or community centers in the community, while others may work in downtown Wichita, which is just around 3 miles south via Interstate 135. Since downtown Wichita is so close, locals will have easy access to events like the Old Town Farm and Art Market, which runs from April to December, and Wichita Riverfest, a nine-day festival that typically happens in early June. Those wanting to explore Kansas' capital city head 140 miles north via Interstate 35 and Interstate 335 to Topeka; the route has tolls. Anyone wanting to explore other cities can take U.S. Route 400 to Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, which is 9.5 miles away.Chicken Chicken, Kirby's Beer Store and other local establishments
North Central is home to several local establishments like Chicken Chicken, a small, locally owned drive-through joint known for its fried chicken and fish. Its bright yellow and red façade makes it hard to miss. Next door at Berneal's Carryout, patrons grab 99-cent cheeseburgers, among other well-priced meals. Another establishment in the community is Just Like Mama's Kitchen, where diners feast on soul food classics like fried ribs and collard greens. Those wanting to enjoy a drink can head to Kirby's Beer Store. With a dimly lit interior complete with stickers and posters plastered on the ceilings and walls, this establishment offers a unique experience. It provides everything from patio seating to performances from local musicians and comedians. North Central is also home to That's You, a consignment shop that's perfect for those looking for a new outfit. Locals can grab groceries at Dollar Plus Grocery & Smoke Shop or head to the nearby Dillons for a wider range of goods. For other dining and shopping opportunities, Kerry Dunn, the broker and owner of NextHome Excel, who has experience in the area, says that many residents head toward Wichita State University. Popular among many locals is Braeburn Square, a mixed-use shopping and dining space.Parks and the nearby MacDonald Golf Course
For some time outside, locals can head to Spruce Park, which features a small play space and a basketball court. Or they can go to the 3-acre Lynette Woodard Park, where visitors challenge their friends to a match on the tennis and basketball courts, and those wanting to get a workout in head inside to check out the recreation center's fitness facilities. Dunn says that many residents enjoy their proximity to the 18-hole MacDonald Golf Course. With scenic fairways lined with cottonwood trees and a youth golf center, this course has become a favorite for those of all ages around Wichita. Another nearby green space that Dunn recommends is the 50-acre-or-so McAdams Park, which is known for honoring influential Black Wichitans. "I mean, it's really popular throughout the year, but it’s even more busy in the summer," Dunn says. "There are outdoor gospel concerts all the time and lots of art events. It even has a really big Juneteenth celebration." The weekend-long celebration includes a beer garden, local musical acts and a cookoff. The park's assembly area and charcoal grills make it the perfect place to hold a celebration. Also home to various athletic facilities, including a pool and the city's first baseball diamond with artificial turf, the park is home to League 42, one of Wichita's youth baseball leagues.Community Centers and the public library
A couple of community centers provide North Central residents with resources and entertainment, including The Center, which offers rentable spaces. The organization also has a computer center and offers a variety of health services throughout the year. Similarly, Lynette Woodard Park is home to the Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center, which hosts community events and features health and wellness courses. The Urban League of Kansas is a non-profit that provides Wichita residents with courses in financial literacy, youth college and career exploration opportunities. The community is also home to the Maya Angelou Northeast Branch Library. Local artist Priscella Brown memorialized Angelou in 2021 by painting a mural of her on the side of the library.Wichita Public Schools USD259
Children can enroll in Wichita Public Schools USD259. Students will attend different schools depending on where they live. Some North Central students attend L'Ouverture Career Explorations and Technology Magnet Elementary School, which boasts a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1 and receives a C-minus rating on Niche. Students can continue to C-plus-rated Wilbur Middle School, where nearly 800 students learn. They can join the school's National Academic League and robotics programs. They can finish their schooling at B-rated Wichita Northwest High School, which Niche ranks as the No. 12 best public high school in the Wichita area. Students can take advantage of career and technical education pathways, including business and design programs. Students also have the opportunity to take college classes at nearby schools like Wichita State University.Wichita State University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine
North Central is home to the Wichita branch of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. The community is also just about a mile from Wichita State University, making this area a popular spot for students and those working in academia. The school's Charles Koch Arena and Cessna Stadium are even closer. "One of the unique things about the university is that they have the Innovation Campus which partners the school with different companies like Deloitte and Wesley Healthcare," Dunn says. "It's kind of like a joint venture with the university and the companies. They do research and have employees on campus, making this area convenient for people wanting to live around the Innovation Campus." Another company on the campus is Airbus; it houses more than 300 employees on university grounds. Art lovers will want to head to the university's Ulrich Museum of Art, which features an extensive contemporary art and outdoor sculpture collection.
