Modest ranch styles and contemporary designs near sorority houses
Homes north of 25th Street are typically three-to-four-bedroom ranch styles on 10,000-square-foot lots enclosed by wooden fences. Winding roads to the south have sprawling ranch styles with contemporary details, such as picture windows and flat or asymmetrical roofs, located on 1-acre parcels. Though Northeast Heights doesn’t have sidewalks, it’s not uncommon to see sorority girls walking to class, as several Greek-life houses line Omega Court in the neighborhood’s southernmost region. Buying here typically costs between $150,000 and $300,000, a range similar to a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price. “There are a good amount of rental properties here, but there’s still plenty of non-college residents for it not to be considered a totally student-heavy neighborhood,” says Flores.
Unique museums and athletic hubs abound at Wichita State University
WSU offers over 60 undergraduate programs, ranging from aerospace engineering to early childhood education. Northeast Heights residents will find numerous amenities nearby on the school’s 330-acre campus, like the Steve Clark YMCA, which has a fitness center open to all. Housed in its original brick-and-mortar location, The Pizza Hut Museum details how the chain was founded by two former students in 1958. Art lovers can wander the 88-piece sculpture garden at the Ulrich Museum of Art, while basketball fans can watch the Shockers play at Charles Koch Arena.Wichita Public Schools
Children here can attend Buckner Performing Arts and Science Magnet Elementary, rated a C-minus by Niche, continuing to C-graded Stucky Middle School. Lastly, they may go to C-plus-graded Wichita Heights High, where students can take free concurrent courses with Wichita State University Tech. Classes include computer essentials, production welding processes and modern literature.
Playgrounds at Dr. Glen Dey Park and easy access to the K-96 Bike Trail
Dr. Glen Dey Park is immediately west of the neighborhood, making it easy for locals to walk or bike along its 2-mile sidewalk system. The basketball courts host pickup games, while the football field holds youth games every fall. From the eastern playground’s modern merry-go-round to the tire swing zip-line at the western option, the park is filled with activities for children. A portion of the 8-mile K-96 Bike Trail is in Northeast Height’s northern region. Its paved terrain passes through prairie land, eventually connecting to the 2-mile Chisholm Creek Trailhead at Oliver Street. A trek along this nature trail ends at the Great Plains Nature Center, a Kansas wildlife museum.
Drinks at Braeburn Square and shopping at Bradley Fair
Just off 21st Street is Braeburn Square, a mixed-use commercial center developed by WSU in 2015. It has chains like Jersey Mike’s and Starbucks, plus some locally owned options. Social Tap Drinkery is an industrial-style hangout with grilled pizzas, made-to-order burgers and over 30 rotating beers and ciders on tap. Serving grape leaves stuffed with rice and four-cheese gnocchi, Sesame is a Mediterranean and Italian fusion restaurant in the area. An Aldi grocery store is 3 miles east on East 21st Street, and over 50 other restaurants and retailers are 4 miles in the same direction at the Bradley Fair Shopping Center, including Pottery Barn and Barnes & Noble.Northeast Heights is near Interstate 135 and WSU bus stops
Lined with numerous Wichita Transit bus stops, Hillside Street and Oliver Street lead to Kansas Highway 96, spanning the neighborhood’s northern region. However, most Wichita destinations can be reached using Interstate 135, just 3 miles west. Another 3-mile drive south on I-135 leads to the Old Town entertainment district. The Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is about 10 miles southwest via the interstate and U.S. Route 400. Only 3 miles east is the Wesley Woodlawn Hospital on Woodlawn Boulevard. Students and non-students can hop on the WSU Campus Route free of charge at Yale Avenue and Perimeter Road.
