Residential charm and city amenities

Northeast Wichita includes a sprawling mix of residences, shopping and dining, with fields and farms replacing suburbia as Wichitans head further from the city. Some folks move here for Wichita State University: “WSU has a main campus in Northeast Wichita and several satellite campuses around the city,” says Jack Silvers, owner and broker of River City Realty, who has been a Realtor for the past 44 years and a resident of Wichita for the past 70 years. However, the luxury shopping, new constructions and proximity to downtown Wichita are also a large draw for new and longtime Wichitans alike.

Well-maintained homes

Yards have grass cut short and many homes have multicar garages. The sidewalk-lined streets of Northeast Wichita feature the occasional streetlight and leafy tree, with more trees and home variation inching closer to the city. “Though it was traditionally the most expensive part of Wichita, Northeast Wichita is now on equal footing to parts of western Wichita,” says Silvers. Prospective home buyers can compare: Northeast Wichita offers many three-bedroom/three-bath new constructions starting at $239,000 and ranging to $350,000 for a four-bedroom. New constructions in the contemporary style are between $700,000 and $1 million; some of the higher-end homes have won design awards. New duplexes on the market average $359,000 and rental townhouses average $1,595 monthly. Several $30,000 lots are also available in this ever-growing suburb.

Important to Know

Northeast Wichita includes two small public airports: Colonel James Jabara Airport and Beech Factory Airport. And it’s not far from Cessna Aircraft Field and McConnell Air Force Base. To get to the Kansas Medical Center, residents continue on East 21s Street toward Andover. All in all, this mixed-use suburban community is not far from rural or urban life.
