Historic military community
In 1951, the Korean War brought an influx of Boeing employees and McConnell Air Force Base personnel to Wichita, so the Oaklawn community was quickly developed. After the war ended, the population decreased for a few decades. But in the early 2000s, the area saw new life with the construction of an activity center and community park. “It’s one of three housing developments that was specifically created for military families,” says River City Realty owner-broker Jack Silvers. “But now most people are moving there because it’s reasonably priced.”
Homes to buy or rent
Not every neighborhood street has a sidewalk, but mature trees offer shady places in front lawns. An abundance of modest two-bedroom ranch-style homes with vinyl facades. There are also rows of mobile homes and a few recently built minimalist traditional homes with two-car garages. “There’s a good mix of homeowners and rentals; it’s about half and half,” says Silvers. If you’re looking to buy in Oaklawn, it costs anywhere between $60,000 and $100,000, a range below a Wichita home’s average $200,000 selling price. However, renting a house here typically costs between $800 and $1,200 per month.
