Orchard Park
Midcentury homes dominate the market
Modest midcentury ranch-style dwellings with features like low-sloping roofs and bay windows are common in Orchard Park. There are also a few split-level layouts with one-car garages tucked underneath the second story. Remodeled traditional homes can also be found across the neighborhood for something a bit more modern. Orchard Park house prices “have slowly gone up over the years, but it’s still very affordable considering the location,” says Flores, and this shows in the fact that homes in Orchard Park spend under half the number of days on market than the national average. The median price hovers around $175,000, which reflects the fact that two-thirds of the homes in the neighborhood sell for between $130,000 and $190,000, with very few reaching above $230,000.
Fast commutes to jobs across Wichita
Orchard Park provides convenience without having to deal with through traffic, notes Flores, “It’s right next to Interstate 235 and Kellogg Avenue, but it’s not a high-traffic area.” This is helpful for the blue-collar workers who need to head to the manufacturing jobs to the east and west – like those in the aircraft industry who head to Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, just over 4 miles southwest. Healthcare is the other major employer in the region, and Via Christi Hospital St. Francis is 4 miles away, providing 24-hour emergency care as well as hundreds of jobs. One mile further, Wesley Medical Center has served the community since 1912.Diversity in dining options
Latin flavor in Orchard Park shines through as Tacos Lopez serves up their takes on savory Mexican classics late into the night. Asian takeout staples including crab Rangoon or lo mein feature alongside street food like satay and paad krapow at Thai House. Just to the northeast, a Dillons grocery store provides everything residents need for day-to-day meals. Wichita shopping centers like Towne West Square or Sweetbriar are nearby and feature big box stores. Generations of Wichita is home to over 70 vendors offering antique and artisan products, while Mopig’s is filled with vintage toys, collectibles, gaming consoles and games, trading cards and more.
Offering unique athletes an opportunity
At the heart of the neighborhood is the namesake park, with a playground and courts for basketball and tennis, along with a quarter pipe at the skatepark specifically meant for beginners. Most notably, Orchard Park houses a rubber baseball and kickball diamond for the Miracle League of Wichita, a sports organization for athletes with disabilities – the first of its kind, open since 2012. Orchard Park Pool has a twisty waterslide, and residents can scale the rock-climbing wall or jump off the diving board in the warm weather. In cold weather, Orchard Recreation Center has a small fitness center and gymnasium with pickleball courts – enthusiasts will become a member at The Pickle Club, which offers pickleball lessons, leagues or slightly less competitive open play times.Magnet schools feature heavily
Most children in Orchard Park will attend nearby Dodge Elementary, a magnet school with a program focused on literacy. Some may attend O.K. Elementary School, while still other may start at Black Traditional Magnet Elementary School, with the magnet theme of Project Based Learning. All of these elementary schools earn a C or better from Niche. Students come together at Hadley Middle School, which earns a C grade and offers a wide range of art and sports activities. Football players can follow in the footsteps of Hall of Famer Barry Sanders at Wichita North High School, a C-plus school with a four-year Bio-Med program that prepares students to move into the healthcare industry. Students may also attend other magnet schools within the Wichita Public Schools USD259 or private schools like St. Joseph Catholic or Northfield School of the Liberal Arts.
Part of the greater city
Tucked away from the heart of the city, Orchard Park doesn’t host too many events, instead heading downtown for Wichita Riverfest, a nine-day long-running festival featuring concerts, fireworks, food courts and more that generally takes place over the first full week of June. It’s the largest community event in Kansas, and residents will head down multiple times over the run of the fest.Much more than just a park
Sedgwick County Park is a quick hop under Interstate 235. It’s no ordinary county park – it’s home to the Sedgwick County Zoo, which allows guests to walk among a few of the zoo’s 3,000 animals in their experimental exhibits. It’s also the grounds for the Great Plains Renaissance and Scottish Festivals, along with a baseball field complex, RC track, pickleball courts, a massive playground and four lakes amongst miles of walking trails.
