Modest, mid-20th century homes in Planeview United
Planeview United’s homes tend to sell for modest prices, between $75,000 and $85,000; the average Planeview United home costs a third of the average Wichita residence. The age of the housing, as well as Wichita’s location at the heart of America, play significant roles in determining Planeview United’s competitive housing prices; local Realtor Karen Wright says, “We don’t get the swings of the bigger places along the coasts, so we are more affordable. You can get the most value for your money, and homebuyers can find different housing choices.” Most of Planeview's housing consists of ranch-style homes, and residents may find themselves living along main roads, on tree-lined side-streets or in quiet cul-de-sacs. Homes may be built in brick or in wood, and some houses sport their own garages; all of Planeview's homes enjoy access to sidewalks, making this community easily navigable.

From Thai An Oriental Market to Dillons
Today, Planeview is known for its diversity of both culture and character. The 1980s saw Planeview become an oasis of diversity as the aftermath of the Vietnam War led to the development of a large Southeast Asian community that has added cultural vibrancy to this historic community. As for Planeview’s local amenities, Wright says, “It has history, live music, breweries and plenty of walking and biking trails.” Planeview’s history often expresses itself through local amenities, such as Thai An Oriental Market and the popular Chiang Mai Thai Restaurant, while local businesses such as Casey’s Bar & Grill bring locals together over food, drinks, and billiards within a neighborly environment. Planeview residents also live just 3 miles away from the nearest Dillons supermarket, keeping home cooks’ shelves stocked.

Exploring L.W. Clapp Park
Planeview is surrounded by parks, the largest of them being Planeview Park. Here, athletically inclined locals can play tennis, basketball, baseball, and even cricket in an expansive sports complex on both sides of Interstate 35. Just a few blocks north of Planeview, L.W. Clapp Park – a former golf course – is a popular venue both for outdoor strolls and for disc golf. Five different disc golf courses offer variety for each playing experience, just as several miles of paved paths – formerly for golf carts – provide plenty of routes for tree-shaded walks.

Air Force origins
Planeview has a remarkable, if comical, backstory to its name. In 1942, during World War II, Planeview and neighboring Beechwood were developed to house defense contractors working at McConnell Air Force Base. This perhaps influenced the developers’ decision to spell the town’s name like the aircraft commonly observed at the nearby base rather than as a reference to the American heartland’s rolling plains. Planeview’s mid-20th century housing, composed primarily of ranch-style homes, continues to house hundreds of residents, while the airbase continues to serve in its historical functions.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
