Lakeside recreation and a central northwest Wichita location
Home to a 40-acre recreational lake, Ridgeport is a northwest Wichita community that comes alive every summer. Living along the sandy shoreline makes it easy to swim and launch a pontoon for a day of skiing or catch-and-release largemouth bass fishing. “On the Fourth of July, everyone decorates their boats in red, white and blue and does a fun parade across the water,” says Heather Golden, an associate broker and Realtor with J.P. Weigand & Sons, who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. Locals can also walk or ride bikes to the community pool along North Ridge Port Circle, an area with a resident-only tennis court and playground open year-round. Located in the Maize Unified School District and just 3 miles north of restaurants and retailers along West 21st Street, Ridgeport adds an element of suburban convenience to its lakeside lifestyle.
Ridgeport has neo-eclectic homes along its lake's sandy shoreline
Ridgeport’s cul-de-sacs are lined with sidewalks and neo-eclectic homes built in the early 2000s. Brick-and-stone-façade homes have three-car garages and four bedrooms. Mature oak and willow trees dot quarter-acre lots, many enclosed by wrought iron fences or backed up to the lake’s shoreline. “There aren’t big boat docks in Ridgeport,” says Golden. “You might see some tie-ups, but the entire lake has a sand shoreline, and people usually just drop an anchor in the shallower parts.” Residents often add fire pits, volleyball nets and jet ski ramps to their lakefront stretch. Homes without lake access start at $350,000, and waterfront properties can cost $650,000, a range higher than a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price. Renters will also find a few options with lake views; Ridgeport Apartments has one-bedroom units for $900, while The Vue has three-bedroom options costing around $1,700 per month.
Ridgeport is located in the highly rated Maize Unified School District
Children here are in the Maize Unified District, where every school has an A-minus grade from Niche. They may attend Maize South Elementary, continuing to Maize South Intermediate for fifth through sixth and Maize South Middle until eighth grade. Lastly, students can go to Maize South High School, which has over 20 pathway programs, including business finance, animal science and early childhood teaching. St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School serves students from preschool through eighth grade; the church has been here since 2008 and hosts weekly student masses plus several weekend services.
West 21st Street and Wichita’s largest open-air shopping center are both nearby
Besides a Scooter’s Coffee and a few medical buildings along Ridge Road, Ridgeport isn’t home to many commercial options. However, the neighborhood is about 3 miles north of West 21st Street, and the thoroughfare is lined with shopping centers and restaurants. Hurts Donuts is a drive-through known for unique flavors like maple bacon, while 6S is a swanky steakhouse with live music every Thursday and Friday. Wichita’s largest open-air shopping center, NewMarket Square, is just 4 miles west of the area. Shoppers can grab groceries here at the Sam’s Club, Walmart Supercenter or Target. The shopping center has several other chain retailers and restaurants, from Eddie Bauer and Old Navy to Buffalo Wild Wings and Cold Stone Creamery.
Reflection Ridge Golf Club and Sedgwick County Park are a quick drive away
Besides its private facilities and lake access, Ridgeport is near a few other recreational hubs. Opened in 1989, Reflection Ridge Golf Club is 2 miles south of the neighborhood. The 18-hole course is made with bent grass fairway and fescue roughs. Members can also play on the tennis courts and use the pool, which hosts Friday night happy hours and daytime youth swim meets. The 400-acre Sedgwick County Park is another nearby green space, just 3 miles away. Its 4-mile sidewalk network surrounds four fishing lakes and an art park filled with Kansas-inspired pieces, like totem poles and buffalo statues. From the boundless playground’s rope climbing structures to the 3,000 animals at Sedgwick County Zoo, the park has numerous activities for children.
Ridgeport has easy access to Old Town and other Wichita destinations
Though Ridgeport is about 4 miles from Kansas Route 96 and Interstate 235, locals won’t have to hop on the highway to reach some of Wichita’s most popular destinations. For instance, Wichita’s Old Town entertainment district is 8 miles east via Zoo Boulevard. A 7-mile drive along North Ridge Road leads to the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, and Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa is the closest hospital, just 7 miles west. The nearest Wichita Transit bus stops are along West 21st Street.
