Riverside has active green spaces and cultural hubs amid 19th-century homes
Bounded by the Big and Little Arkansas rivers, Riverside was built as a Wichita trolley suburb in the 1880s. As Arts and Crafts homes filled with residents, the city purchased acres of land around the waterways, slowly developing green space into parks and museums that still exist today. “This is a well-established and close-knit neighborhood because of the parks,” says Jack Silvers, the owner and broker of River City Realty, who has sold homes in the area for over 40 years. “You see the same people walking and biking to school or going to a different park every day.” Sidewalks connect Riverside Park's north, central and south sections on the banks of the Little Arkansas River. The 18-hole Arthur B. Sim Golf Course stretches along the Big Arkansas River’s eastern shore, next to an 18-acre botanical garden. A 44-foot-tall steel Native American chief sculpture, dubbed The Keeper of the Plains, towers over the river’s confluence. The red-brick and glass Wichita Art Museum and the Old Cowtown Museum, depicting life on the frontier, sit on Museum Boulevard. With several access points on the neighborhood’s western border, the paved Arkansas River Bike Path connects Riverside with the Old Town entertainment district, only 2 miles southeast.

Arts and Crafts houses in Riverside
Homes on 6,000-square-foot lots dot Riverside’s gridded, sidewalk-lined streets. Mature bur oak trees shade three-bedroom Craftsman-style bungalows. Wrought-iron fences enclose the back and front yards of American Foursquare houses. Red-brick staircases lead to 2,500-square-foot Tudor Revival cottages. Most homes have detached one-car garages, though parking on the street or in the gravel back alleyways is not uncommon. Buying in Riverside typically costs between $150,000 and $275,000, a range similar to a Wichita home’s average $200,000 selling price. A few contemporary-style apartment complexes are in the neighborhood’s southernmost region.

Riverside Park has a zoo, a century-old gazebo and The Keeper of the Plains
Vintage lampposts line the Central Riverside Park’s sidewalk network, which has a cobblestone-terrain splash park at its core. Visitors will notice a mosaic solar calendar, known as the mini Stonehenge, and a Spanish-American War memorial featuring a bronze soldier statue and an 800-pound canon. Black chain-link fencing encloses animals like bobcats, beavers and eagles at the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit, a native zoo with no entry fee. A terracotta-tiled roof villa from 1913 overlooks the lily pad-covered pond at North Riverside Park. After launching a kayak at South Riverside Park, locals can paddle to The Keeper of the Plains to watch the ring of fire that burns around the statue for 15 minutes every night. South Riverside also has a trailhead for the Arkansas River Bike Path. “It’s called a bike path, but I always see people walking on it,” Silvers says. “Especially on the weekends, when people are heading downtown.”

Locals can walk to Wichita’s museum district and Botanica
Totem poles are in the sculpture garden outside the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, where interior artifacts include tipis, turquoise jewelry and clay pottery. The Wichita Museum of Art is filled with pop art paintings, Annie Leibovitz photography and pieces by Kansas artists. Dirt paths weave between clapboard façade saloons, working blacksmith shops and one-room schoolhouses at the 23-acre Old Cowtown Museum. Actors wearing leather boots and linen trousers tend to farm animals and work with printing presses. “People will try to see the Keeper of the Plains, the art museum and Old Cowtown all in one day since they’re so close to each other. It's sometimes called our museum district,” Silvers says. Downtown Wichita’s skyline peaks over red maple and elm trees on the public Sim Golf Course, which first opened in 1921. Botanica has over 4,000 plant species across its numerous exhibits, like the evergreen grove, brimming with cedar and cypress trees. A Chinese pavilion adorns the entryway of the bamboo garden and koi pond, while rainbow-colored playground equipment and wooden treehouses are in the children’s garden. Every Tuesday from April through May, the Twilight Tunes on the Terrace event allows locals to walk around wildflower fields and sip cocktails as jazz music and guitar strums fill the air.

Kansas has all four seasons, sometimes in one day. Spring is pleasant and usually wet and mild. Summers are nice but can become extremely hot and have risk for droughts and severe storms with tornado's although none have ever hit Wichita. Autumn is beautiful with clear crisp days, a beautiful transition to winter. Winter can sometimes be harsh with frigid temperatures and lots of snow, but then some years it has mild temperatures and little snow.
