Historical neighborhood with new features
“Many South Central residents have lived and worked in the area for their entire lives,” says Nikkel and Associates broker Marti Vo, who has 19 years of experience in the area. Neighbors can settle down in this historic neighborhood, one of the oldest in Wichita, which seems to have a mix of everything. As more railroads and highways were built in the early 1900s, the once entirely residential neighborhood of South Central benefitted from an influx of commercial and industrial additions. The area continues to grow with new businesses and recreation hubs on the Arkansas River among the longstanding houses.

Homes with character
South of downtown Wichita, the neighborhood is composed of grid-style streets of single-family homes on compact lots, often decorated with flourishing trees. South Central has sidewalks, making it a walkable community for easy errands. Like many neighborhoods built in the early 20th century, most of South Central is packed with Craftsman bungalows. The neighborhood also features national-style and American Foursquare homes. Although they are rarer, South Central also has a few Victorian-era Queen Anne-style houses with wraparound front porches and intricate details. Sales prices in South Central range from $70,000 for a bungalow to $375,000 for a newly constructed town house.

Recreation on the river and urban parks
The Lincoln Street Bridge area has a boat launch to bring kayaks and canoes onto the Arkansas River. Visitors can also go fishing or enjoy a view of the river’s dam while strolling by on the walking path. For more exercise, the paved Railroad Trailhead connects to Wichita’s 18-mile Redbud Trail. At Lincoln Park, kids can use the playground and the splash pad. Under the Kellogg Overpass, rollerbladers and skateboarders can find Wichita City Skatepark, created by world-renowned Skatepark designer Wally Hollyday. The concrete park has three of the deepest skate bowls in the Midwest.

For a dine-in option, Kelly’s Family Diner serves classic comfort food breakfasts in a rustic interior decorated with knickknacks. For lunch, people can head to the cash-only, no-frills deli called The Grinder Man, which has been a Wichita mainstay since the 1970s. The neighborhood is also known for its locally-owned Mexican food spots — Taco Shop has a drive-through and counter-serve options.
