South City
Brick faced bungalows
The neighborhood has a majority of single-story homes. “It’s a good starter area, especially if you like brick," says Jack Silvers, a Realtor and resident of Wichita for more than 44 years. "It’s quiet and affordable, and you’re still in the city without the energy.” Bungalow and National-style homes with brick facades dominate the area, with decently large yards around or under a half-acre for a typical quiet city suburb. Larger plots with vinyl-sided National-style homes can be found closer to the Arkansas River, and the Towneship at Clifton has rows of mobile homes and a community playground and swimming pool. Prices in the area range from $50,000 to around $150,000, with the lower prices primarily covering the mobile homes and older two-bedroom family homes. Three to four-bedroom homes with more recent updates are available closer to $100,000.Acres of parks and community gardens
The community has several outdoor recreation spaces. Herman Hills Park is a 33-acre green space with a playground, disc golf course and walking trail that formerly served as a makeshift rock concert venue before the Herman Hills Riot in 1979. Leon Robinson Park hosts a metal playground two miles away and a set of basketball courts on 4 acres. Garvey Park gives access to the 10-mile Arkansas River Bicycle Path and a canoe launch. During the growing season, neighbors can rent plots at Garvey’s Garden of Eatin'. When considering outdoor recreation, residents should note Wichita sees about four tornados annually, primarily in May, though not many have caused extensive damage.Retail favorites at Pawnee Place shopping center
Pawnee Place shopping center offers easy access to groceries at Walmart Supercenter and other retail options, such as GameStop. Locals can also stop by Kim Son Asian Food Market and Thai An Oriental Market. Fat Ernie’s Family Dining is a neighborhood staple for homestyle dining with southern comforts like steak, eggs and fried chicken. South City also features numerous Latin restaurants, like Birrieria Tito or Puerto El Triunfo, which features Salvadorian cuisine. La Dulceria Del Sur has traditional Mexican candy. The area also features a nightlife style with live music at Barcode or pool at Shooters Billiard Club & Restaurant.Career minded education with Wichita public schools
Anderson Elementary School rated C-minus on Niche and partners with Girls on the Run Heart of Kansas to encourage young female students. Greiffenstein-Wells Middle School also ranks a C-minus and has several programs through its libraries to engage students in reading. Wichita South High School, with a C-plus, offers career and technical skill programs and education pathways, preparing students for careers in biomedicine and aviation.Travel anywhere from Wichita
“There’s a phrase we use here: It’s easy in Wichita. You don’t have trouble finding anything, cause it’s in the middle of everything,” said Silvers. With plenty of retail, recreation, and grocery stores in South City, its location, less than 4 miles from downtown, adds convenience. The neighborhood sits north of Interstate 135, and Wichita has three airports. Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is the closest to South City, making travel across and outside the state accessible.
