Sunflower
Suburban Neighborhood in Wichita, Kansas
Sedgwick County 67203, 67213

Diverse housing stock
Distinct booms in Wichita’s growth are demonstrated by the different periods and styles of homes in Sunflower. “There are older homes, mostly built from the twenties to fifties,” says Snyder, “Most have two or three bedrooms, one bath.” Quaint bungalow-style Craftsman homes with small front porches are a sign of the early-century cattle drive boom, while sprawling ranch-style dwellings rose up during the midcentury aviation production-based housing boom. More recently, modern traditional homes and townhouses signal a third boom working its way through the neighborhood. Most homes sell for between $100,000 and $180,000, with a select few – usually multi-unit buildings – selling for $220,000 and up. Turnover is pretty quick in the neighborhood, according to Snyder, and most homes sell within 2 weeks of hitting the market.
Open Streets across the city
“You’re so close to downtown and Delano, the river is there, you’re on the outskirts of so much to do,” says Snyder. The Delano Paddy Day Parade is a short walk for Sunflower residents, as a street party and food truck rally take over Douglas on St. Patrick’s Day. In the fall, Open Streets ICT starts at the border of Sunflower and Delano, taking up a four-mile stretch of Douglas all the way to College Hill with live music, art, food, yoga, entertainment and more.
Brimming with locally-owned spots
Crispy Donuts is a one-stop breakfast shop, from savory croissants stuffed with ham, cheddar cheese and jalapeno to sweets including classic glazed doughnuts or fancier flavors like strawberry shortcake and maple bacon. West Street Burgers grills up classic smash burgers and hand-cut fries for a quick bite, while Le Monde Café and Deli brings together French, Italian and Mediterranean under one roof to truly experience a world of flavors. A night out might wind up at The Cowboy Inn Saloon for live music and a cold beer – the rustic interior and old-timey Western-themed mock town in the beer garden are a twist on the classic dive bar vibes. Plaza West Shopping Center is home to Dillons groceries, as well as Book-a-Holic where second-hand books get a new life. Meanwhile, Westgate Market Square, with a Walmart, Lowe’s and other big box stores, helps residents take care of all their errands in one spot.Roll on over for some fun
West Douglas Park offers 17 acres of play space in the center of Sunflower. Multiple playgrounds, softball diamonds and tennis courts are open to the public, and there is copious green space with shade trees to lounge under. Central to the park, a mosaic-covered open shelter covered in mosaic butterflies, designed by local artist Tina Murano, provides a small stage. Residents may also venture to the river to enjoy all it has to offer, from walking and biking to throwing a line in and waiting for a bite. For some indoor recreation, Carousel Skate Center is more than just a popular roller rink – it is home to Wichita’s largest indoor playground and plenty of vintage arcade games.
Convenience by any means
Sunflower has easy access to the rest of Wichita – “Kellogg Avenue goes east and west and makes it easy to get around Wichita, to downtown or the airport,” says Snyder. It is walkable and bikeable and offers public transport via the Wichita Transit bus system. Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is only 4 miles from the neighborhood, making it easy to grab a flight. Medical care – and the jobs that come with it – is also not far, with Via Christi Hospital St. Francis just 4 miles to the northeast.
Starting in the arts at a young age
Students in Sunflower will attend either Lawrence or Franklin Elementary School, before moving on to either Hadley Middle School or Mayberry Cultural and Fine Arts Magnet Middle School, where students can take classes like visual art, choir, jazz band and orchestra to compliment the traditional learning program. All four of these schools earn a C from Niche. Wichita West High School, two-time winners of the city league for football, also gets a C from Niche. Wichita Public Schools USD259 allows students to attend other magnet schools with specific programs or attend private schools such as St. Joseph Catholic or Northfield School of the Liberal Arts.
Higher learning nearby
Just outside of the southeast portion of Sunflower, Friends University and Newman University campuses are home to roughly 900 students each and provide jobs to the area. Friends University is a nondenominational Christian school that offers 40 undergraduate programs, with fine arts being one of the most popular departments. Newman University is a Catholic institution offering more than 30 student organizations ranging from campus ministry to gardening club.
