Fast-growing district close to local businesses
In Uptown Wichita, residents are in the center of several commercial districts – they can walk to 500 locally owned businesses in the Douglas Design District and make their way to bustling Revolutsia for another meal. “It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood that isn’t going to slow down anytime soon,” says 44-year Realtor Jack Silvers with River City Realty. “The north end along Central Avenue is rapidly becoming a cool place to go, and just east of the neighborhood, a bunch of homes were repurposed into a shopping center called Clifton Square.” Popular with starters and long-time locals alike, Uptown is for people who want to support local businesses and eat their way through Wichita.

Shipping off to Revolutsia
Walking down Central Avenue for the first time, residents might do a double take at the Revolutsia district. Here, 36 small businesses are housed in shipping containers – yes, shipping containers – and people can pop into one of these quirky rectangles for a unique meal or shopping spree. Maybe they’ll try scratch-made, German family recipes at Prost and follow up at Ze German Markt, a local grocer with all the bratwurst one could need. For a caffeine fix, they could sip a Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte at Pennant Coffee. Gardeners can head across the street to Worldwide Cactus and Exotics, and creatives can walk to nearby Mid-America Fine Art Gallery. After everyone’s had their fill, they can sit in colorful patio chairs and relax next to the fire pit. Nightcaps abound at Crown Uptown Theatre, where they can watch a musical or comedy in a 1920s Vaudeville atmosphere.

One-of-a-kind 19th-century homes
Craftsman bungalows and four squares resulted from eastern Kansas’ lumber boom in the early 19th century, and today, they make Uptown a unique place to be. Some facades have colorful brick, others have subdued siding; some kitchens have new appliances and linoleum, and others have original hardwood and cabinets. They all have front porches in common, wide enough for rocking chairs and adjacent to mulch-bedded lawns. A two- or four-bedroom home can sell between $150,000 and $225,000, depending on the renovations needed and lot size. Easternmost residents should note the noise from Interstate 135, which is noticeable but not overwhelming.
