Hunter Park
A Wilkinsburg neighborhood with comparatively low home prices
The neighborhood has a mix of single-family homes and rowhouses. Most properties were built in the early 1900s and sit on narrow lots, some of which are set above street level because of Hunter Park’s hilly topography. American Foursquares, gablefront cottages and colonial-inspired rowhouses are the norm, with the occasional Tudor-inspired home mixed in. Wilkinsburg has historically struggled with high vacancy rates, and a 2023 report from the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation claims Hunter Park’s vacancy has nearly doubled over the last decade. Most Hunter Park residents are renters, and groups like the WCDC are working to rehabilitate some of the neighborhood’s vacant homes. Investment properties can sell for anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000, while prices for renovated houses typically range from $90,000 to $175,000. Although Hunter Park’s overall CAP Index crime score of 6 out of 10 is only slightly higher than the national average of 4, scores for certain violent crimes are higher.Wilkinsburg has its own school district and a private Catholic school
The Wilkinsburg School District serves the neighborhood and earns an overall grade of C-plus from Niche. Students in prekindergarten through sixth grade can attend the C-plus-rated Kelly Primary School and C-rated Turner Intermediate School. Turner Intermediate offers a free after-school program that provides students with tutoring, dinner and physical activity. A partnership with the B-minus-rated Pittsburgh Public Schools allows seventh through 12th-grade students to attend Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy 6-12, which receives a C-minus. All three schools are set to undergo renovations after both districts received a $15.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2024 to improve their energy efficiency. Private school options in Wilkinsburg include Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy, serving prekindergarten through eighth grade.Hunter Park is a popular spot for outdoor recreation and events
Hunter Park, not to be confused with the neighborhood itself, has basketball courts, a ballfield, a covered picnic pavilion and a playground for kids to explore. After receiving $150,000 in Local Share Account Funding in 2024, Wilkinsburg plans to update the park’s amenities within the next year. The green space is also a destination for events, including the annual Wilkinsburg Community Day. Community Day is typically held in July and brings residents together with live music, free food and family-friendly activities for all ages. In the neighborhood’s southeastern corner is Park Avenue Park, which features a playground and two basketball courts.Hosanna House is one of two community centers in Wilkinsburg. It’s less than a mile from Hunter Park and supports the borough with various resources, including after-school programs for kids and career counseling for adults. The Wilkinsburg Public Library, about a mile away, offers more recreational and educational programs.Local businesses include restaurants in downtown Wilkinsburg
A handful of local businesses sit along Hunter Park’s eastern border. Rockin Ribs is a family-owned restaurant serving soul food, while Royal Caribbean Takeout & Delivery is a counter-serve spot known for its traditional flavors. Cousins Market serves as a neighborhood corner store where residents can grab the essentials.Downtown Wilkinsburg, less than a mile from Hunter Park, has more shops and restaurants. “There’s some new development going on over there, and some more shops are starting to come around,” Pugliesi says. Downtown includes chains like Aldi, Save A Lot and Walgreens. Mixed-use developments in the historic Lohr Building and Wilkinsburg Train Station highlight downtown’s ongoing revitalization, and the former showcases local artists in the Lohr Gallery. While the business district still has some empty storefronts, longstanding institutions such as Salvatore’s Pizza House & Bar have been part of the community for more than 40 years.PRT buses and I-376 connect residents to downtown Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Regional Transit provides residents with access to public transportation. PRT bus stops line the neighborhood’s eastern edge, and the bus connects riders to destinations such as downtown Pittsburgh. For those who prefer to drive, downtown is about 9 miles away via Interstate 376. Hunter Park is around 26 miles from Pittsburgh International Airport and less than 5 miles from UPMC Shadyside, the closest hospital.
