Mill Creek attracts families, college faculty and retirees alike
Mill Creek’s name comes from the stream that meanders through its center. The neighborhood is made up of several wooded subdivisions just outside the city limits of Williamsburg. However, the area doesn’t sacrifice attributes such as highly rated schools or easy access to commercial areas for its privacy. Pairing a quiet atmosphere with convenience, Mill Creek attracts a wide range of residents, including families, faculty at the nearby William & Mary and retirees.
Colonial, ranch and new traditional homes in the Williamsburg woods
Narrow streets branch off John Tyler Highway and Ironbound Road into Mill Creek’s subdivisions. The neighborhood is built into the woods, which provide peace and privacy for the area’s properties. Most of the colonial and ranch-style homes were built in the second half of the 20th century. These sell for $270,000 to $550,000, while larger Colonial Revivals and new traditional homes sell for $580,000 to $710,000. Townhomes and condos are scattered opposite Route 199 from most of the single-family-home developments and tend to sell for $170,000 to $220,000.
Highly rated WJCC schools, plus William & Mary nearby
Mill Creek students can attend Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, which receives an A-minus overall grade from Niche. While the neighborhood is split between attendance zones, students can attend Clara Byrd Baker Elementary, which gets a B grade. Berkeley Middle and Lafayette High each receive A-minus ratings. Lafayette High is the oldest high school in WJCC, opening in 1973. Walsingham Academy is a private option, receiving an A-plus grade for kindergarten through 12th grade. William & Mary, the country’s second-oldest university, is in Williamsburg and has roughly 7,000 undergraduates.
Shopping and dining along Monticello Avenue
Monticello Avenue is one of Williamsburg’s main commercial drags, with several shopping centers along the corridor. Target and Publix are directly across the street in the Monticello Marketplace shopping center, while retail stores such as Old Navy and fast casual restaurants like Cava are located in Settlers Market. The New Town mixed-use development is just a bit farther. But residents find good eats up and down the avenue. “There’s an Indian place out there, Masala, that’s over in the Courthouse Commons shopping center,” says Randy Haufe, an associate broker with Shaheen, Ruth, Martin & Fonville Real Estate, who has sold in Williamsburg for nearly a decade. “And then Opus 9 is out there, a bit further over. Those are two good ones.” Local favorite Five Forks Cafe, less than a mile away, serves greasy-spoon diner cuisine. Residents can also head to the town center of Williamsburg, where college-student hangouts like Paul’s Deli and Green Leafe Cafe offer cheap drinks and late-night eats.
Families drawn to Kidsburg, plus plenty of other recreation options
Residents venture across Ironbound Road to Veterans Park, which features an expansive ship-themed playground for kids to explore. “The playground is called Kidsburg, and there’s a lot of pickleball right there,” Haufe says, noting that the park is popular with families. Nearby golf courses include the public Williamsburg National Golf Club, featuring two courses and a practice facility 3 miles away. The trailhead of the 51-mile Virginia Capital Trail is 4 miles away, adjacent to Jamestown Beach Event Park, where visitors often head on warm summer days for time on the sand. Colonial Williamsburg is 4 miles away; while visitors need a ticket for admission to many of the living history exhibits, locals can walk or jog the grounds for free.
Community events at Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary
Residents take advantage of events and happenings throughout Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg puts on the Grand Illumination holiday celebration three consecutive weekends in December, featuring fife-and-drum parades and a fireworks display. William & Mary has NCAA Division I sports, and fans attend football and basketball games to cheer on the Tribe. Saint Bede Catholic Church is within the neighborhood and features community events like concerts.
Route 199 is one of the area's main highways
Route 199, the main road around the outside of the city of Williamsburg, cuts through Mill Creek. The highway leads to Interstate 64 in both directions, with Richmond roughly 50 miles west and Newport News about 25 miles southeast. Residents mainly drive to their destinations, though the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority operates a bus system that serves Mill Creek. Richmond International Airport has commercial flights across the country. The area’s two main hospitals, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg, are each 7 miles away.
