A forested suburb in central Wilmington
Woodberry Forest sounds like something out of a classic fairy tale. While talking cartoon squirrels and songbirds can't be counted among this Wilmington suburb's residents, there are plenty of the regular variety, thanks to the area's wealth of lush trees. Sitting just off South College Road, Woodberry Forest is close to the Pine Valley Country Club, beautiful parks and top-rated public schools. Residents enjoy living between Downtown and Wrightsville Beach, meaning great restaurants and attractions are under 15 minutes away. "It's in a very good school district, it's centrally located, close to parks, close to the beach," says Art Ricks, a Realtor with Ricks Realty and a resident of Woodberry Forest. "I love it — that's why I live here."

The beach is a quick drive away
College Road is easily accessible just west of the community and leads commuters to Shipyard Boulevard, a major highway that'll take them to Downtown, Wrightsville Beach and many other nearby Wilmington destinations. "Wilmington is the biggest small town in North Carolina," says Ricks. "Everything is pretty close to each other." However, access to a vehicle is essential, as there aren't any nearby bus stops.

Stately Colonial Revivals make up the area
Large, new traditional homes comprise the community, with most sitting between 2,000 and 3,700 square feet. Colonial Revival architecture is typical in the area, with stately columns and rows of windows. Homes sit on lots with plenty of acreage and include sought-after features such as decks, in-ground swimming pools and widely paved driveways. "Not many houses are available here—and when one does go up for sale, they sell quickly," says Ricks. Lawns are meticulously manicured in this community, and sidewalks are lined with mature trees, providing plenty of shade for neighborhood strolls. Home prices range from $515,000 to $740,000.

Holiday magic on Kirby Smith Drive
Every winter and fall one specific house in Woodberry Forest lights up the neighborhood — referred fondly to as Woodberry Lights. The Wulf family, who live on Kirby Smith Drive, take holiday decorations seriously. Each Halloween, they host a spooky haunted house and throw a party for other families in the area. During the winter holidays, they put on a light show that attracts people from all over Wilmington, with over a hundred people making the drive each year on Christmas Eve. About 40,000 animated lights, 37 inflatable decorations, snowmen, Santas, animated spinning trees and more cover this house on Kirby Smith Drive, transforming an ordinary suburban street into a magical holiday paradise. Locals drive up, tuning their radios to 101.1 FM to see the lights dance and flicker in tune with the music. The Wulf family also hosts Snow Nights, in which snow machines create a winter wonderland and hot chocolate is handed out to neighbors. It's just a slice of what makes this community special.

Holly Tree Elementary School earns its overall Niche grade of A-minus. "We have a very strong community base here," says Dr. Mary Jones, Principal of Holly Tree Elementary. "The PTA is very involved. They put on fall festivals, movie nights, you name it." The school is a Leader in Me School, which means it teaches students to follow the seven habits from Steven R. Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" "We also have a very strong science department and one of the best music departments in the area," says Jones. "Susan Gardner is our music teacher, and she's the lead music teacher for the entire district. We do several musical performances a year." After school, Holly Tree offers YMCA programs to further enrich students' lives and support working parents. This isn't the only top-rated school in the area. Woodberry Forest students go on to attend Roland-Grise Middle School, which has an A-minus Niche grade, and John T. Hoggard High School, which earned an A grade and was ranked the third-best public high school in the Wilmington area. "It's a very sought-after area," says Jones. Wade Park offers scenic walking trails
At the southeast end of the neighborhood sits Wade Park, a roughly 17-acre park offering a long list of amenities including a half-mile-long walking trail with bridges that cross the local creek, a playground, shaded picnic areas and ample opportunities to spot wildlife such as wading birds, fiddler crabs and fish in the creek. "The Wilmington Cross-City Bike Trail can be accessed from Wade Park," says Ricks. "You can easily bike from the park to the beach." West of Woodberry Forest is the Pine Valley Country Club, where locals have been playing golf since 1955. The golf course is an 18-hole private championship course suitable for golfers of all skill levels. Slightly further west, about a five-minute drive away, is Halyburton Park. Gently rolling sandhills and towering pine trees comprise this 60-acre park and nature preserve. Visitors can explore a paved ADA-friendly path that surrounds the park and other scenic nature trails or kayak along the surface of the park's pond. The park also offers nature programs, workshops, fitness classes and other fun events.

Guy Fieri-approved seafood
The Pine Valley Shopping Center is just west of the neighborhood, across College Road. There, locals can pick up their groceries at Publix, pick up their prescriptions at Walgreens and pick up dinner at Something Fishy Seafood. "If you like fried seafood, you'll love Something Fishy," says Ricks. The locally owned and operated seafood shack was featured in Season 28 of Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," and it wowed with its clam chowder, fried trout, scallops and hush puppies — made with their own hush puppy mix, of course. The shopping center is also home to Brewster's Ice Cream and a Zaxby's Chicken when one craves a nationally-known favorite.
