Rural neighborhood with natural views

Out in Central Kentucky’s horse country, Wilmore is a small rural neighborhood that has a strong community and plenty of outdoor recreation. Families, retirees and students at the town’s college can all find an older home to settle down in. “It’s a country town where everybody knows everybody, and everybody looks out for each other,” says Michael Sayre, a real estate agent with United Real Estate who has almost 20 years of experience.

Asbury University’s Impact

At the heart of Wilmore’s town center is Asbury University, providing a Christ-centered higher education to its students. Asbury’s campus takes up most of Main Street, and its various academic and athletic facilities can be spotted around the town. One of the largest landmarks of both the school and Wilmore is the Ashbury Theological Seminary. “The university does impact the community a bit, but in a good way,” Sayre says.

Nature preserves and town parks

As a mostly rural neighborhood, Wilmore is surrounded by wooded areas and nature preserves. Following State Route 29 out of town will take residents to High Bridge Park, where they can hike the trails to the overlook for a view of the High Bridge of Kentucky and the Kentucky River Gorge. There’s also a museum, playground and Victorian pavilion on the grounds. To the east, the Jessamine Creek Gorge is a 155-acre nature reserve that has dirt trails for people to explore. Those who want something more recreational can stay in town and visit Centennial Park. Little ones can play on the playground while others kick a ball on the soccer field or shoot hoops on the basketball court. The park has a nine-hole disc golf course that takes players through the grassy field area. Lastly, residents with furry friends can take them to Mackenzie Sayre Dog Park.

Shopping in Wilmore and Nicholasville

Wilmore doesn’t have much in terms of retail, but there are a few local joints along Main Street next to the Asbury campus. Get fresh meat and produce from Fitch’s IGA Grocery and other essential items from Dollar General and Ferrara and Son’s general store.
