Wilton's suburban charm and accessibility to New York City
Located in the scenic Norwalk River Valley, Wilton has historic acreage homes, high-performing schools and easy access to New Canaan, Long Island Sound and New York. Despite having robust suburban amenities, Wilton is also devoted to land preservation, with its largest open space park being an expansive forest. "It's right in the midst of a lot of activity," says Mary Phelps, a Realtor at William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty, with over 15 years of experience. "It has its own rail line that goes into New York, a very adorable little downtown and a vibrant retail industry on Route 7."
Homes on at least an acre, and less expensive than in New Canaan
Architecture ranges from antique properties to contemporary and modern houses. Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes and farmhouses are prevalent, many on 1 to 2 acres or more. While single-family homes dominate, there are also some condos in the town's denser commercial area. Wilton's diverse landscape accommodates different lifestyles. "Some people want to be closer to town and prefer a busier road. Others want to be in the woods with total privacy," Phelps says. The median sales price is $1,280,000, well below neighboring New Canaan. Phelps notes that a home's location, size, acreage and extent of renovations figure into pricing. Sprawling, luxury homes on large acreage that allow for deep privacy command the highest prices.
Open spaces, nature trails and parks with programming and history
The Norwalk River Valley Trail winds through Wilton, connecting parts of town and linking to Merwin Meadow Park. Located on the Norwalk River, locals head here to fish, bring their kids to the playground and kick the soccer ball around. The park's swimming pond and beach were affected by a 100-year flood that hit Wilton in 2024, but are expected to reopen in 2026.
South of town center, Schenck's Island offers meadowland walks. North, Woodcock Nature Center runs youth programs and Weir Farm National Historical Park preserves the summer home of impressionist J. Alden Weir. To the east, Rolling Hills Country Club is a membership-based social hub with an 18-hole golf course and racquet facilities. The Lake Club is a members-only sports club. Wilton Town Forest draws hikers and horseback riders. Sherwood Island State Park is around 12 miles away for beach days on Long Island Sound.
