Cross Junction: a mix of waterfront homes and rural landscape

Farmstands, mountains and a lakeside development make up Cross Junction, a community covering the northeast corner of Frederick County and stretching to the West Virginia state line. Most homes are in Lake Holiday, a gated community surrounding a lake of the same name. The development started as a weekend getaway, but it has evolved into a permanent home for most residents, says Lake Holiday Board of Directors President Elizabeth Hair. The 1,000-home subdivision is one of the only lake communities of its size in the county, and the semi-rural landscape and recreation bring in retirees, families and others who want to remove themselves from the hustle and bustle but live 30 minutes from the county seat of Winchester. Outside the gates of Lake Holiday, farms and scattered homes dot the countryside.

Lakefront homes and secluded properties

Construction kicked off in Lake Holiday in the ‘70s, and the community’s earliest homes display the most architectural variety. A-frame houses with tall windows, angular contemporary houses and split-levels with timber framing are all found along the winding roads. Homes built since the ‘90s are more similar in style, often new traditional designs with Colonial Revival or Cape Cod features. There’s a shrinking number of unbuilt lots, where new construction is springing up. Homes typically sell between $250,000 and $505,000, though waterfront properties may sell in the $700,000s. Despite the size of Lake Holiday, neighbors stay in touch through various Facebook groups. For example, people have posted car trouble only for other residents to offer assistance, Hair says. “If people ask for help, residents are quick to respond. I’ve not had ingredients for meals, and people offered them through Facebook.”

Elsewhere in Cross Junction, ranch homes and Colonial Revivals are spread among farmland and woods. They occupy spacious lots that usually measure at least 2 acres. These homes start at $270,000, with prices climbing to $690,000.

Cross Junction receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Recreation includes boating and fishing in Lake Holiday, hiking farther north

Recreation in Lake Holiday starts with the water. Lakefront homeowners keep their boats at private docks, while others rent slips from the community marina or haul their vessels from their driveways to the boat ramp. The lake allows powerboats no longer than 21 feet, so people may tube and ski across the water. There’s a no-wake section of the lake, Hair says. “There are very few houses there. You can drop anchor and float in nature or paddle around in a kayak. “The water is stocked with bass, so fishing is popular from boats and the community pier. The community maintains the lake by monitoring water quality, dredging coves and cleaning up shorelines. Dozens of other recreation amenities dot the community, from a bocce ball court to nearly 3 miles of wooded hiking trails. A few holes of a defunct golf course were transformed into a disc golf course.

On the northwest side of Cross Junction, mountains cover the area bordering West Virginia. People can drive or hike along a gravel road to the top of Cacapon Mountain. A swing awaits at the overlook on the summit, and people can sway back and forth while taking in views of four states: Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Modernized campus at Frederick County Middle

Many kids in Cross Junction attend Gainesboro Elementary School, which Niche grades a C. Next door, C-plus-rated Frederick County Middle School students take classes in one of the district’s newest campuses. Opened in 2016, the middle school features an astronomy lab, outdoor classroom and trails around the property. After eighth grade, students can go to James Wood High School, which gets a B. Buses can’t navigate Lake Holiday’s narrow roads, so they pick up kids at the front of the community. Four miles of gravel trails were built through the community to help children walk to the bus stop.

Community events and social clubs common in Lake Holiday

Volunteers on Lake Holiday’s Activities Committee organize roughly 20 events throughout the year. Easter egg hunts and a petting zoo come to the community during the Spring Fling, and the committee puts together a fireworks show on July 3, followed by a boat parade on Independence Day. From square-dancing to movie screenings on the beach, there’s usually at least one event every month, Hair says. Those don’t include the nearly 20 clubs that meet at Lake Holiday, including kayaking groups and coffee meetups.

Taking Route 522 through Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia

U.S. Route 522 is the car-dependent community’s primary highway. It leads 15 miles south to Winchester, the county seat, and extends northward into West Virginia and Maryland.

Shopping local farmstands and stores in nearby Winchester

When it’s warm enough to hit the water, Lake Holiday opens a snack shop where residents can grab pizza or ice cream. Outside the community, retail and dining are limited. Many people get their fruits and vegetables from farms around Cross Junction. For example, Hair says she often stops at Shawnee Springs Market. The Whitacre family first started farming in the region in the 1810s, and today they sell produce, fresh-baked pastries and some pantry items at the store. The market also makes sandwiches for breakfast and lunch.

Meanwhile, Godfather’s Pizza Express and Reynolds Store Thriftiques stand across the road from each other in Reynolds Store, an unincorporated community on the northern end of Cross Junction. Typically, locals do their shopping in Winchester. Shoppers can find nationally known retailers such as Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement and a collection of locally owned shops and restaurants in Old Town Winchester.
