Large yards and shaded trees cover most of homes in Windcrest.
Just the right fit for many San Antonio families
A quiet suburb 15 minutes northeast of downtown San Antonio, Windcrest sits between Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base, offering residents convenient access to both. Here, well-maintained ranch-style homes house families whose children attend highly rated schools and take tennis lessons in the evenings while parents play pickleball and golf on weekends. Strip malls along the neighborhood’s borders make grocery and retail shopping convenient, and each winter, residents from across San Antonio travel to Windcrest to catch its annual Christmas light show. “Windcrest has deep roots in San Antonio,” says lifelong San Antonio resident and Realtor Craig Morris. “In my experience selling there, things sell quicker there than anywhere else. It’s one of those neighborhoods where people might not know what they want, but they know they want to be in Windcrest.”

Ranch-style homes with updated interiors
Windcrest has mostly ranch-style homes, typically with a traditional brick façade but some having modern finishes like painted brick or strips of wood paneling. Though they’re primarily traditional ranch-style homes, some have elements of midcentury modernism like large windows and interior exposed brick, and many have been recently renovated to provide updated interiors. Large backyards are common, as are pools. Newer homes in the neighborhood are often traditional with a mix of sidings like brick, limestone and vinyl. Prices in Windcrest tend to fall between $300,000 and $450,000, with a median overall price of about $315,000. The neighborhood also “has no HOA fees, which is a huge plus to a lot of buyers,” Morris says.

In high school, students in North East ISD can take classes at the Institute of CyberSecurity & Innovation, a magnet program for students interested in cybersecurity that partners with cybersecurity companies in San Antonio for hands-on learning opportunities. Windcrest is also home to the charter elementary school Heritage Academy of Windcrest and the charter Premier High School, both of which received Bs on Niche.

Pickleball, roller skating and other recreational activities
Operating since 1976, Skateland East is many residents’ favorite spot in the neighborhood to stay active and let loose. Neighborhood kids grow up going to birthday parties here, and the center also offers themed events and adult nights. Takas Windcrest City Park is the go-to spot to spend time outside, where kids have baseball games and play on the playground and adults go for jogs and play tennis. The public Windcrest Golf Club lets any resident book a tee time, and at FIT High Performance Tennis Academy, kids take tennis lessons and adults play pickleball. “A bunch of people are going there from all over the city,” Morris says. “It’s supposed to be one of the best places to go play pickleball.” The playground on the campus of Windcrest Elementary is a popular hangout for families on weekday evenings, letting parents socialize while kids let off steam, and for a weekend tread, they head to Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park.

Homestyle soul foul and plenty of retail shopping
Just about any Windcrest resident would probably say the best restaurant in town is Mrs. Kitchen, a soul food spot where meatloaf with a side of mashed potatoes and red Kool-Aid is a culinary delicacy. Other popular spots include Benny’s, which is known for its breakfast tacos, and Pollos Asados los Norteños, known for its chicken fajitas. Strip malls line the neighborhood’s southern and western borders, giving residents access to retailers like Walmart, Ross and The Home Depot and grocery stores like Asia Supermarket and H-E-B.

All eyes on Windcrest for its annual Christmas light display
Windcrest’s annual Christmas light display, Windcrest Light-Up, is its best-known event, visited every year by residents from all over San Antonio. “The Christmas light display brings a lot of attention to the city,” Morris says. “National TV networks have displayed clips from Windcrest’s lights during Christmastime.” The city of Windcrest hosts additional community events throughout the year like its National Night Out, a celebration that fosters positive relationships between the city’s police department and the community, and its annual 4th of July Parade. The city also hosts two community garage sales throughout the year, allowing residents to get to know their neighbors while cleaning out their closets.
