About Windsor Locks, CT

Quiet commuter town home to Bradley International Airport

Located between Hartford, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, Windsor Locks is a small town of about 12,500 people along the Connecticut River. Primarily a commuter town, Windsor Locks residents enjoy convenient access to Bradley International Airport, proximity to Interstate 91 and a new train station. “You can get virtually anywhere for traveling and commuting,” says Richard Lovely, broker and owner of Live Lovely Realty. “Windsor Locks is very much close to highways and main roads.” Along with its many transportation options, the town's simple suburban homes and small-town appeal make it a relaxing place to settle down while staying regionally connected.

Driving on Interstate 91 and a new train station coming to town

Interstate 91 takes drivers 15 miles north to Springfield, MA and 15 miles south to Hartford. The highway continues to New Haven, 50 miles south. Those who prefer to take public transportation can ride CTtransit buses to the airport, Hartford and other nearby towns. Windsor Locks is building a new train station that will expand current transit options, servicing both CTRail and Amtrak lines for regional and interstate travel. The project broke ground in 2022 and is expected to be complete by mid-2025. A private real estate firm is also constructing a transit-oriented, mixed-use development within walking distance of the new station. The project will include over 100 low-income and market-rate apartments and over a dozen retail spaces. Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks has direct flights to dozens of locations, including international destinations like Dublin and Cancun. Airplane noise can be an issue for some residents. “It depends on how close you are to the airport if you’ll hear anything,” Lovely says. “Most residential areas are further away, but proximity is important and being right on the airport changes things.” Bradley International Airport is also a major employer in Windsor Locks. More employers nearby include Baystate Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Aetna and Cigna healthcare insurers in Hartford, and Hartford Hospital.

Businesses around the airport and along Main Street

“There’s a really great food scene right on the main strip outside of the airport,” Lovely says. The road has chain restaurants like Ruby Tuesday and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, as well as local spots like Doro Marketplace and Mazatlán Mexican Grill and Bar. On the other side of town, Main Street has a few shops and restaurants. Dexter Plaza off Main Street has a brewery and pizza shop, among other businesses. For groceries, Stop & Shop is just south of Windsor Locks off Interstate 91.
