A Madison area getaway
30 minutes north of Madison via Route 113 is the Village of Windsor, a suburb that Wisconsin buyers are flocking to. Two new subdivisions, Diamond Village and Bear Tree Farms, contain lots of house size and price options. However, the new construction doesn’t mean Windsor has lost its tucked-away quality. Tammy Shallberg, a successful realtor and resident of Windsor, describes it as “a place for people to get away from the Madison area a little bit, that has so much community life.”

Evergreen shaded lawns and two-car garages
Along the strollable looping streets are ranch-style and split-level homes with spacious front lawns, shaded by mature spruce and fir trees. Each house has its own unique blend of materials and styles. Some have column-framed entrances evoking Greek Revival, while others sport wood paneling and geometric shapes reminiscent of Midcentury Modernism. Regardless, almost every home has two bedrooms and a two-door garage.
On one end of the spectrum, a condo or duplex can cost around $280,000, while on the other a single-family home with five bedrooms can be $720,000 or more. Homes in Windsor have a median cost of $549,000. However, often prices fall below that because care has been taken to keep them from skyrocketing. “The developer is building smaller homes, and that’s really helped keep the price point down,” Shallberg says.
Many newer housing developments can be found in Windsor.

B-rated schools in Windsor
Windsor’s schools are rated a B by Niche across the board. These are Windsor Elementary School, Harvest Intermediate, DeForest Middle and DeForest High. Two aspects that the district is praised for are a high rate of afterschool club participation and high overall safety, particularly for children with special needs. Another unique feature is the split of primary education between two schools: Windsor Elementary for Grades K-4 and Harvest Intermediate for Grades 5-6. According to Shallberg, “Since we’re seeing so much growth right now, the middle school was getting overcrowded. Separating the fifth and sixth grades gives the kids more space to grow and keeps the class size manageable.”
Windsor Elementary school is part of a highly-rated school district outside of Madison.
Parents of Windsor area and beyond can send their children to Harvest Intermediate School.

Pickleball and splash pads
16 parks are sprinkled throughout Windsor. Each one offers a variety of sports and activities, from basketball and pickleball courts to playgrounds and splash pads. At the heart of the village is the 22-acre Windsor Fireman’s Park, which holds all sorts of community events. Some, like Summer Movie Nights, are low-key and cozy. Others are all-out extravaganzas, none more so than Windsor Fest, when the park becomes a massive fairground with games, food and pony rides.

Shopping and dining in nearby DeForest and Sun Prairie
Most dining and shopping can be found in the neighboring towns of DeForest and Sun Prairie. BB Jack’s and Buck and Honey serve American comfort food with an international twist. Branch + Daughter Quality Meats and Market sources goods from local farmers and has become a fixture of the community. The market stocks high-quality ingredients and meals, either pre-made to take on the go or prepared fresh to order. When it comes to bigger grocery hauls, Costco, Target and Walmart are all 15 minutes away. However, the people of Windsor prefer Woodman’s Market, a chain native to Wisconsin. Plans are in the works for the Village Center of Windsor Crossing, a new downtown area that will bring more business and housing opportunities into the heart of Windsor.
