Founded and settled by a single family in 1796, Winfield Township began as an industrial community tied to the businesses of limestone mining and grain milling. While it no longer serves as an industrial hub and is now home to over 3,000 people, the township maintains its small-town feel as an agricultural community anchored by the presence of family-owned farms and local businesses. Winfield Township embraces a feeling of seclusion and tranquility alongside Pennsylvania Route 356, which winds through the countryside and provides access to the rest of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area.

Ranch-style homes and custom-built estates
A wide variety of architectural styles complements the township’s verdant landscapes. From traditional ranch-style and split-level homes to more modern New Traditional builds, properties in Winfield Township offer residents plenty of privacy. Tree-lined lots average just over an acre, and winding country roads lead to sprawling farmhouses and custom-built estates with up to 50 acres of land. Many homes take advantage of their acreage with outdoor features like patios, bank barns or detached storage sheds. Prices typically range from $200,000 for an older home to $550,000 for newer construction. Custom-built properties with several acres of land tend to be more expensive, selling for upwards of $735,000. Winfield Township has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Access to the Butler-Freeport Community Trail
Near the center of town is Winfield Township Community Park, which has a playground, a paved walking path and a covered pavilion with picnic benches. Over in the southwestern corner of the township is the Butler-Freeport Community Trail, which runs along the banks of Little Buffalo Creek. “The trail is so well-maintained, and you can go for miles. It’s got beautiful views,” says Michelle Blume, a Realtor with Realty One Group Gold Standard with over 15 years of experience in the industry. The entire trail system spans 21 miles and follows the path of the former Western Pennsylvania Railroad, which is now a popular destination for walkers, runners and cyclists rather than trains. Residents can become members of the local Tarentum District Sportsmen’s Club, a recreational group with opportunities for skeet shooting, archery and other outdoor activities. Winfield Township is about 6 miles from the Saxon Golf Course, which features two public golf courses.

The family-owned winery has won over 90 awards since opening its doors in 2006, and visitors can sample handcrafted red, white and rosé varieties. For more dining, the borough of Saxonburg is about 6 miles east and features spots like Mainstreet Bake Shop and Novotny’s Pizza.
